This has gone by before but I was too busy at the time... (tagged from [livejournal.com profile] chrisilin)

Book meme.

* Grab the nearest book.
* Open the book to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST

These booklets are of exactly the same style of How to Run a Lathe being heavily illustrated with photographs and drawings.

Okay, so the closest thing was Lindsay's Technical Books, a catalogue...

Closest "real" book:

Most spiders have a trace of venom, but only two spiders in the United States -- the black widow and the brown recluse -- have enough to injure a human.

Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening...

And because I'm feeling silly, how about one from the book right under that one?

The Boggart was very partial to poetry, especially ballads.

From, The Boggart, by Susan Cooper, which I haven't had a chance to read yet.

What Heather Means

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.

Success comes rather easily for you... especially in business and academia.

Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You're a strong person.

You are friendly, charming, and warm. You get along with almost everyone.

You work hard not to rock the boat. Your easy going attitude brings people together.

At times, you can be a little flaky and irresponsible. But for the important things, you pull it together.

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are a seeker. You often find yourself restless - and you have a lot of questions about life.

You tend to travel often, to fairly random locations. You're most comfortable when you're far away from home.

You are quite passionate and easily tempted. Your impulses sometimes get you into trouble.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.

You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.

You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

Eek, I try not to be overbearing! And I could have gone a lot further in either business or academia but chose not to, which probably helped me avoid the Type A personality part... And while I like seeing different places, I like knowing I have a place to come home to :) But overall, a fair cop.

This morning it was three, but seems to have grown...

Rules: Post 5 things you've done that you believe nobody else on your F-list has done. Indulge in remorse if someone calls you out on a listed item.

1) Went to high school in Hong Kong

2) Viewed the public ladies restroom at the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet (it was too scary for me to use, as the trough opens over a steep slope that goes 300+ feet down...) -- had to be a little more specific on this one, since fitzw and I went to China and Tibet together.

3) Bought a Hello Kitty made with the traditional white clay in full kimono, at the Narita Airport, Japan (for my niece).

4) Worn Kamakura Period clothing with a neck-brace.

5) Worked part-time doing data entry for Smith College for one of my father's research projects at age 11 (yes, I got paid by the college). They were still using keypunch cards.

Pseudo-6) Pseudo because fitzw was there but otherwise I'm pretty sure that no one else on my f-list has had to fly into Narita Airport between three typhoons...

This was actually a bit challenging since I don't things about some of my f-list like if any of you were/are ballet dancers or scuba divers, for instance.

Making the rounds...

The Big Read thinks the average adult has only read six of the top 100 books they've printed below.

01. Look at the list and bold those you have read.
02. Italicise those you intend to read
03. Underline the books you LOVE [I underlined books that I have read repeatedly, in their entirety.]

Not sure how I ended up with that high a score... although I re-interpreted the writing to spouse and to spouse's parents as communicating (includes phone, email, talking). But Martha Stewart doesn't live here, for sure!

"Type in "[your name] needs" in the Google search
Heather needs two therapists.

Type in "[your name] looks like" in Google search
I like my food. If Heather was 30 stone, maybe there would be a storyline, but she looks like many of the women I see everyday... (this was a toughy because of Heather Locklear and Heather Mills, both of whom a lot of people seem to have strong feelings about)

Type in "[your name] likes" in Google search:
Heather Likes to Draw! (also monkeys, moving [dancing], and playing it cool... this is the PG-stuff). Oh, and likes full to partial sun.

Type in "[your name] says" in Google search:
Heather says hello to Beatle millions. (oy)

Type in "[your name] wants" in Google search:
Heather [Locklear] wants to kick Pamela Anderson’s ass.

Type in "[your name] does" in Google search:
Heather does her best thinking for her project outside in the safe confines of nature.

Type in "[your name] hates" in Google search:
Heather hates Twitter. (and hubris. Also, apparently there is a punk band out of Boston called Heather Hates You. Bizarre.)

Type in "[your name] goes" in Google search:
Heather goes bonkers. Heather goes swimming. Heather goes back to her roots. (Do you think they go together? Hm....)

Type in "[your name] loves" in Google search:
Heather [Freedman] loves her socks!

Type in "[your name] has" in Google search:
Heather has two mommies. (a popular book in our area, btw)

nb: Gave up on avoiding Locklear and Mills...

Pick 10 people and give them the "you make my day" award. If you're picked, you are charged with picking 10 of your own. (Or not. No purchase required to play or win ;-P)

Perhaps you've been picked because I actually look forward to reading your journal entries.

Maybe I know you in real life and I have deep affection for you.

You could have cheered me up when I was sad or it could be something as simple as giving me a hug whenever you see me.

Or it could be that you have trusted me with a deep dark secret.

The following people on my friends list have my award today*** for one of the above stated reasons:

baronessmartha
bunnyjadwiga
gwynt_y_storm
harpnfiddle
joyeuse60
loosecanon
oakmouse
rising_moon
silverhawkdruid
zaduzbina

*** This was a tough list to make up. I would have liked to be able to list more than this, for sure (left off fitzw, for instance, since I know he'd understand -- but I like his posts too). And bytchearse, who tagged me, and who's different way of looking at things is good for me. And ellid, and islenskr, and, and... Hurm....

Well, as [livejournal.com profile] bunnyjadwiga said in her post, "If you're not on the list right now, I'm pretty sure your day will come. You all are wonderful. You are all on my MADE MY DAY list. Even if You never post. You read. You make me happy."

Thanks!

Some influence from flying to get places, but the line of states from CA to MA is my family's path from when we move to MA in '71 )

Winter Fare in Greenfield was very crowded (good for them, no so much for us). Did get to see the grain mill attached to an exercise bike (L says looks like a 3-1 ratio between them), and a video of the bike-powered thresher. That was pretty cool; not only functional, but the student made most of it from found materials. There's an interesting bead shop in Greenfield, that has rune pendant beads as well as other nifty stuff. Concentus practice in the evening went pretty well, despite our getting there late -- had a couple of errands to run beforehand.

Prep for Sunday was slowed by one of the cats having digestive difficulties (which continued Sunday evening). Imbolc/Candlemas went pretty well; folks seemed happy, and we had more group participation (S has ideas on increasing that, and we're splitting off at least on of the officer positions to help with this). Footing at the Sunwheel was a little iffy at times -- we'd been thinking it would be slushy, but there was also some water on soft ice in places. But overall we managed. Had a lovely gathering afterward; Jeni startled me at one point -- because of the cat we hadn't finished washing dishes and she helped out with that -- not something I expect guests to do, at least not since my mom was younger and we'd sometimes do that at other people's houses. Very much appreciated, in any case.

Called my mom and chatted for a while, then watched part of the superbowl game. L had to go downstairs and we all went for a trip to Greenfield because of a health emergency. We brought W back home around 1:00 a.m., and now this morning everyone is home again, thank goodness. But in the meantime, the older cat decided she needed to at least attempt to throw up on the carpet in the bedroom once an hour for the rest of the night... Hairball treatment has been served again. Cleaning the apartment for Chinese New Year may be more of a challenge than usual this year....

Exhausted and have a lovely headache, but have things to do. Maybe a nap later...

Apparently the recent meme is from a study at the Illinois State University. The meme aspect started here: http://quakerclass.blogspot.com/2007/11/what-privilege-do-you-have.html

This person had permission from the creators of the study to post the questions, with the request that info make its way back to the study (leave a message at the blogspot post that has a link to your relevant post). My thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kass_rants for having the copyright, etc., info.

EDIT: [livejournal.com profile] fitzw went to the original study site, which was interesting. Some questions are different or missing from what ended up on LiveJournal. Also, the original study was done live in a classroom, with people lined up at one end of the room and taking a step forward for each 'privilege'. What I liked about it was that at the end of the questions, it was noted that despite the differences in background (and everyone got to look around to see where everyone was in the room), they had all ended up in the same place in school. Some had to work harder to get there, everyone had different experiences, but in school they had acquired the same rights to ask questions, express opinions, could talk to each other, etc.

Much like my comment on [livejournal.com profile] kass_rants's post that, despite our varied backgrounds, because of common interests we have a rather diverse cross-section of people who have gotten to know one another.

For me, these cross-sections have been created primarily through SCA, AODA, and the Riot for Austerity (90% Reduction). And there are cross-overs between those as well, which is also interesting.

Personally, I'm quite glad that my personal interests and different types of jobs have introduced me to people with so many different backgrounds -- it has made for a much richer life than it might have otherwise been. I look forward to the future being more of the same!

As I sit here drinking my New Year's Eve drink of choice, chamomile tea...

Privilege Meme )

Of course, regardless of privileges one may have grown up with, like high intelligence or great natural skills of whatever sort, none of it matters unless you can find a good way to use it, and are adaptive to whatever life throws at you. My successes have certainly varied over time!

Also, despite apparent differences in background, L's and my backgrounds would be more similar if we compared his background with my parents -- my folks' generation were the first to go to college, both sides, at least as far as I know. But they still did some amazing things -- more so than many college grads.
