Apparently the recent meme is from a study at the Illinois State University. The meme aspect started here: http://quakerclass.blogspot.com/2007/11/what-privilege-do-you-have.html
This person had permission from the creators of the study to post the questions, with the request that info make its way back to the study (leave a message at the blogspot post that has a link to your relevant post). My thanks to
kass_rants for having the copyright, etc., info.
EDIT:
fitzw went to the original study site, which was interesting. Some questions are different or missing from what ended up on LiveJournal. Also, the original study was done live in a classroom, with people lined up at one end of the room and taking a step forward for each 'privilege'. What I liked about it was that at the end of the questions, it was noted that despite the differences in background (and everyone got to look around to see where everyone was in the room), they had all ended up in the same place in school. Some had to work harder to get there, everyone had different experiences, but in school they had acquired the same rights to ask questions, express opinions, could talk to each other, etc.
Much like my comment on
kass_rants's post that, despite our varied backgrounds, because of common interests we have a rather diverse cross-section of people who have gotten to know one another.
For me, these cross-sections have been created primarily through SCA, AODA, and the Riot for Austerity (90% Reduction). And there are cross-overs between those as well, which is also interesting.
Personally, I'm quite glad that my personal interests and different types of jobs have introduced me to people with so many different backgrounds -- it has made for a much richer life than it might have otherwise been. I look forward to the future being more of the same!
