Gavin's finished putting in a floor over the library. When it gets cold this weekend, Lyle's going to remove all the wasp/hornet nest remains for outdoor disposal. Maybe we can take that bag of insulation we still have and insulate some of the roof. I ordered more than we needed for downstairs because it's better than not having enough and we really didn't know how much Gav was going to be able to do, given the uncertain condition of the wall boards on the barn and it being winter.

***

Some sewing is happening as well. Started work on a winter jacket, turning some lengths of knitting nancy stuff into fruit and veg for Tali's porcupine puppet, mending, etc.

Um, moved stuff between the trailer, barn, greenhouse, porch, and basement. Not even going to try to detail all that!

***

Moved some furniture yesterday.... been thinking about it and moving bits here and there for days, then with the warmer weather pushed harder to make it happen. Moved a small table to where the Yule tree had been (for now, anyway), moved the secretary holding most of the beading supplies into the vacated spot in the living room (thanks to Tali for helping get it from the kitchen on over the raised door sills!). There's a tad more light in the dining room now that the secretary isn't blocking part of one of the windows.

Moved an old cabinet that was on the porch into the greenhouse for now. We'll figure out where it goes eventually :D Moved the other old cabinet that's still there over, so there was space next to the nice, matching cabinets that are all on the porch. Lyle detached a low cabinet that was in the radiant floor room (weaving/sewing/office room), moved and reattached it on the porch.

I still have a ways to go to get the porch open enough for Gavin to work on finishing the framing on the windows, but seeing as he doesn't have a lot of free time any more (yay Berkshire Brewing Co.!), there isn't a super hurry there.

BUT! Once Lyle has a cabinet that's under construction in the barn in usable condition, I'll have a weaving station for my table loom again :) Meantime, I keep working on cleaning and bring some sense of order to the chaos, in time for Chinese New Year.

Put up some drapery in the library to help insulate -- warms up faster than wood or sheet rock, catches the heat from the wood stove and keeps it in the room. Also a couple of bagged comforters -- double as seating if needed, currently stuffed against the north wall.

We're learning how to use the wood stove more effectively. It's ceramic-lined, which makes it better to use for several hours, not just a couple.

Zach and Val came up for the Gray family gathering Saturday, and we hung out for part of Sunday. Fitzw had to get the minivan inspected in the afternoon and they went to storage at the same time to get some winter things out. They've been in the South to visit friends and he had work assignments down there for a bit. Now they're in CT for a few weeks.

***

We got in some more plywood and insulation today. Not enough plywood to cover the loft floor over the entirety of the library, but I knew that -- just wanted to make it a little easier to get from one end to the other of the space, for now. The batting was enough though, which was the primary goal. Gavin worked until it got too dark -- I looked for somewhere to hang a light up there but I guess we'll have to add a hook or nail or something.

I cleaned and put up a framed print we got from the printing museum in North Andover a few years back; another fine addition to the library. Also lugged in a couple more comforters and half of one of the tents... the oval marquee has two large bags, one for the walls and one for the roof. The hard bits are stored in the trailer.

I'll try to bring the other half of the tent canvas to the library tomorrow... tonight I should probably work out something for hanging on the north wall. I may just find whatever polar fleece I still have and attach it to the backs of the metal shelving -- easy way to add a layer of insulation.

Doing better today than yesterday -- seems there are more consequences to spending time in a chilly space than there used to be. I thought I was adequately dressed Sunday, but Monday proved that to be untrue, as muscles that had tightened against the cold for too long let me know in no uncertain terms.

20" from the storms that went through. Happily all snow, no rain or freezing rain. I hate freezing rain...

Lots of battening of the hatches went on this past week, in particular finding tools all over the property and stowing them away, and wrapping the barn up -- literally, in some cases. Gavin put a lot of work into putting Tyvek under boards where possible, over them in one spot that we're going to have to re-build next year, blocking potential mouse holes, running some Tyvek along the inside of the roof in a couple of trouble spots until we can re-do the roof there next year, etc.

The barn loom is now in the barn, not quite set up yet but all the bits are there. Found more books and unpacked and shelved most of them. Other books we've been re-homing -- a bunch of medieval ones went to people still active in the SCA, and what they don't want for themselves will go to the barony's auction. Apparently Bergental is hosting the Runnymede dinner this year :)

Yet other books have been going to the transfer station -- there's a book exchange there. And a few are being dispensed with permanently, for a variety of reasons -- mostly in very bad condition.

Decided we don't want MZB books in the collection anymore... In some ways too bad as I enjoyed the Darkover books, but I don't really want to promote her books to anyone. There are so many authors in the world writing good stories and creating interesting worlds that there's no reason to hold on to the books of someone who it turns out wasn't a decent human being.

Had my annual checkup -- well, mostly. I have to remember to call the hospital to schedule a mammogram. Anyway! Tests came back, nothing affirmative for RA and some other inflammatory stuff, which is good but also no answer on chronic pain. Typical. Cholesterol levels are still too high but are continuing to drop, so no threat of statins. Will continue to eat apples and increase fruit and veg intake.

Family gathering happening this coming weekend. Zach and Val will be arriving Friday :) Lyle's been getting in some practice baking this week, much to everyone's enjoyment.

I've mostly been moving stuff, not sewing. But for a friend's birthday present I took the single layer linen jerkin he'd made and then wanted to line and lined it for him. He's a beginner, so it wouldn't have gone well for him to do it -- took a good bit of my experience and skills to make it work, stuff that it would have been nigh impossible for me to explain to him at his current level of experience, plus cut and sew on an edge binding. It looks pretty good and he's very happy, which is the important part.

Looking at finishing a "pith helmet" for Steampunk. Needs a second veil piece, and apparently needs to have the weight re-balanced -- too many flowers on one side :D I'm actually using a beekeeper hat I found at the local farmers co-op.

Got an old bookcase out of the family barn -- yes, we still have stuff there. Cleaned it up, got L's help with knocking the back off of it -- rippled, separated luan. Replaced a smaller bookcase in the library with it and now the smaller bookcase is in the house, serving as additional pantry space for the family living with us.

I'm still having challenges figuring out what books to put where because some shelving is fixed height and pretty much all of the different categories of books have a wide variety of heights. I will make it work eventually, but it may take a while. I literally took a couple of the taller books this week and put them in the giveaway pile because I'm tired of dealing with finding homes for all the tall books. Also on the pile is another Piers Anthony book - hopefully the last - and all the MZB books I've found to date. The first because I find his treatment of men and women in relationships to be extremely juvenile and the latter because MZB. I like PA's concepts for some things so it's too bad he ruins things with making people be idiots. It was a bit hard to give up the Darkover books as they're connected to some good things during my college years, but really, those memories of good things won't disappear and room on the shelves is at a premium. There are a lot of writers out there after all.

Barn loom is disassembled and out in the library, waiting on fixing the floor in one of the barn stalls. A bookcase and hutch we'd moved out of the house because of lack of space is now back in the house (we'd moved the barn loom over into that space so that we could move the office downstairs).

Sewing stuff is moving into the newly opened space. Not all of it, and certainly not all of the fabric! But the fabric I'm working with right now, and some of the most likely next-in-line fabrics. The hutch is mostly good for small stuff, so I may move some things I stuffed into the basement back upstairs... we'll see. There's a light on the hutch that isn't working now -- L thinks the best thing is to replace it and I agree -- we tried to find a replacement bulb for the current fixture but it's some weird-sized halogen so it was a no-go. Would rather have LED anyway. It's a downward-pointing task light, really handy to have.

Moved a whole bunch of stuff in the trailer, covered a couple of possible access points in the floor (mice), got out an old corner entertainment center thing to use in the sewing area, and found SEVEN more boxes of books hiding under a table. If a folding table hadn't been leaning against the front of it I might have found those boxes sooner, but hey. Besides, I can only unpack so fast :D

We also moved another type cabinet from the family farm to our barn, cleaned it up, put shelves of type in it -- except one shelf that's currently missing. Still, a step forward in setting up the print shop.

AND we also moved my old dining room table, because we had to move it to get it out of the way for moving the cabinet and the table decided it needed to partially disassemble itself in a way that couldn't be easily reassembled.

Some more stuff, in brief:

- Clothing swap went well last week

- A person we know lost her home and barn to fire the same weekend as the swap. She and her dog are safe. Fundraising stuff is happening.

- Refreshed my memory on how to walk on stilts, and tried out a weird spiral climbing thing at Double Edge Theater.

- had a physical exam, still have to do some blood work and a mammogram. Anticipate both being non-events, but of course that's to be determined/confirmed

- Working on creating new pain management routine

Eh, well, I've had bigger posting gaps.

So! Ashfield Fall Festival happened -- much walking, enjoyed the Morris dancing, helped out with collecting recyclables, helped with setup and breakdown of the quilt exhibit on the town hall stage (just two of us for setup as usual person-in-charge had a conflict), and helped run interference for a friend who's ex doesn't know when to quit.

Lyle broke his cotton candy-making record this year - 402 in one day! He has two young men helping and learning, thank goodness. Next year he might be able to leave them on their own for a few hours -- not during the rush, of course. He's considering getting a second machine next year -- there's a company that rents them out, so he could experiment for not too much.

Overall, a good weekend.

Library project proceeding apace. I ended up moving some pieces of furniture around, once I got to hanging a few things on the wall and realized I needed to center a few things. Altho' I didn't do that for the metal bookcases -- too many books on them already and every single one would have to be re-leveled because they're on the side that is foam mats on the original concrete, not the new level floor on the other side :D

We did a light test this week, to see how many candles/light sources we'll need for the weekend and where best to put the lights. Picking up a couple of brackets for additional lighting, but really, it's pretty spiff. Yes, I'll try to take pictures this weekend, and yes, I will try to get them on here - Fitzw wrote out directions.

***

Garden's winding down. Wind storm broke the pavilion/gazebo, tearing it out of the ground and whipping it around the crabapple and through two-thirds of the branch fence I made. I'll rebuild next year, I think. We did some foraging this year - autumn olive, black walnuts, hickory nuts, and some butternuts. And for the first time, my hazelnut trees had nuts too :)

***

Library's coming along nicely for the weekend; Gavin installed the second exterior door today :) Likely this is the first time that part of the barn structure has ever been fully enclosed, I think. We're having a small gathering of Tolkien "rangers" - first one last month was mellow, and we're all out of practice at this packing for camping thing. This weekend we may sleep in the library, as it's supposed to rain Sunday and wet canvas tents are no fun.

Gavin also stacked some wood we acquired earlier this autumn, rearranged construction materials to open up the space in front of the library, and moved the brush/wood pile over a bit as well -- some of it will be getting cut up for firewood for this winter's use.

I was thinking we had things pretty well in hand for the outdoors, then I realized Lyle and I hadn't cleared the camp fire area after the storm, we'd just disassembled the broken pavilion so it wouldn't go flying about the field :D Plus I'd started changing things around in the greenhouse from summer mode to winter mode... so, that was a bit of work. Lyle also got some mowing done, trying to get the grass in decent shape for the winter. Some of the grass went into the cold pit in the greenhouse that we use for composting in the winter months.

Got a tunic to a wearable state tonight, finally. For some reason I ended up doing the whole thing by hand... the sewing machine faces away from the television so I don't like to use it at night, and during the day I've been doing stuff outside the house a good deal of the time.

Boiled eggs tonight; rest of the cooking's tomorrow, plus hoping to make some clothing on the machine. We'll see how it goes... Figuring out how to get the weight-loss thing going again is good, but I don't have as much energy/stamina as my body is trying to get used to the new state of being.

Whatever it is that likes to go out of alignment in my upper back is doing its thing - everything's inflamed between the shoulder blades, plus affecting downward to hips of course and also the right shoulder. Been that way for a few days now - too bad I have things to do. Treating it with everything, not doing certain kinds of things - much. So, no archery or anything that requires repeated fast action.

If I'm methodical though, I can get things done. Yesterday I made 29 trips from the trailer to the library with boxes -- nothing over 30 lbs., most of it more like half that, I think. Still, there's a ladder at the trailer and it's uphill to the library, so it was a workout. 31 boxes of books and a box with a paper version of Redwall Abbey in it.

Also a trip to the house with a box of DVDs and videotapes.... didn't mean for those to end up in the trailer, but it could have been worse. We watched one of the DVDs last night, so we have at least one that's still good.

Today I probably will move some more books, but I've gotten to some boxes that either need more thorough checking over before I move them into a clean space, or need to be re-boxed into smaller boxes.

My goals are to get most of the books into the library for sorting and also to make space in the trailer for some stuff that needs to be out of the barn. Oh, and more work on a couple of light fixtures I finally started work on yesterday.
helwen: (Default)
No staining today. Had to wash the floor for marks, so now it's drying, which means no sanding. Not all the nails are set deep enough on the counter or the pass-through windows to putty over and I can't find the nail set. Prep work is a PITA.

At least I finished painting the ceiling trim on the west wall, so that's something.

At times like these, I have to keep reminding myself that it's still going faster than last year or the year before - the only thing that keeps me from screaming.
helwen: (Default)
Started doing archery again, after all these years. We tried a few times, both at the family farm and when we first moved here, but other things took priority. Trying again. Teaching the muscles to do things again is about the same challenge. Annoying, because I know what I'm doing wrong but I still can't stop it (yet).

I use a 30# bow, nothing too strenuous for the shoulders, so it's definitely do-able.

Bought 8' tree stakes to use for the mini-Moot's wind wall. It'll be handy in general for whenever we'd like more privacy for our activities. The walls will of course not be up in the winter -- too much wind then, and we aren't out as much then anyway. The wind factor will hopefully change over time, as we continue to work on planting trees and they get bigger.

The two Hazelnuts really shot up this year! And they have nuts for the first time, so I have to read up on that, for harvesting. Might need to get a few more of those...

***

I started work on an "Elven chandelier" yesterday. I've been working on the design in my head, pulling in more possible materials, etc. Started assembly finally, always interesting to figure out what's possible with what you have... I did buy some small split rings because it was the best joining bit that I could figure out -- happily the local hardware store had what I needed.

We'll see if there's time for archery today -- I'm doing a lot of arm work, so....

Yesterday we gathered up some of the cut wood from the town's tree work. The road is going to be repaved so they were making sure the equipment could get through.

Also, we walked up to the bridge that's being worked on -- for the folks who aren't from around here, the bridge has been getting whittled away by storms for a few years and was down to single-lane and getting worse. The new culvert/bridge supports in the middle of the bridge area are in, but nothing connects it to the road on either the uphill or downhill sides, as of Thursday evening.

Today is moving the 8' tree stakes out of the minivan and into the gazebo, then working on painting and staining in the library. Zach's going to be digging holes and putting the stakes in next weekend.
helwen: (Default)
Did some nail setting and wood puttying this week, as well as painting trim pieces that will be used for the door ways and maybe some other places.

Thought about doing some woodburning on the inner parts of the central doorways, but I think I'll just stain them and then paint some designs at some point.

***

Threw away/recycled some stuff, pulled some materials together for an "elven chandelier" project, print/fold/cut/packaged/delivered a bunch of cards to Elmer's Store, picked up a desk in town for the housemates.

***

Went shopping this morning, got some 8' tree stakes and some groceries. The tree stakes are for putting up a wind wall along the meadow, so we can have a little more privacy. Goal is to get it set up for the pre-Moot. The walls would be down during the winter -- we aren't out as much then, plus the winter winds can be fierce.

I spent some time digging out the lower part of the field drainage system and moving the soil up to the berm -- we stopped when the Eastern Meadowlark made her nest right next to the berm and it's been hard to get re-started.

Then when he came over, I switched to digging out plants near the drainage area, prepping it for planting trees and also Milkweed. Yes, we still haven't planted all the trees, and in fact some of them could probably use a different home :D Tali was going to help with this but then she got heavily scheduled at work, so between that, the kids, and recovery time, plus duties in town, we haven't been able to work together.

Lyle's been alternating between mowing, taking dug up plants over to the far tip for composting, and working on the berm, etc.

Tired people are tired. And of course I'd like to be working on the library or sewing or something, but this needs doing too. Winter's coming, plants need to go in the ground or come inside over the next several weeks.

Saw Marty Benjamin again this morning - TCM for the win! Nice to be getting back more mobility and having a lot less pain these days. Chronic pain is not for the weak ;)

Took it easy for a bit, then finished painting the last bit of wall in the library.

Was going to do garden stuff - been neglecting the veg garden, such as it is - eh, tomorrow?

At least I picked a handful of blueberries :D

***

While I could wish for being pain-free, there are levels and there are levels. And while I'd like to have a lower level (which may yet happen), I appreciate that I'm no longer on ibuprofen on a near-daily basis, as I was earlier this summer.
helwen: (Default)
Between the weather and my health (very much connected when asthma and humidity are both in the mix), painting the library has taken much longer than I'd like. Well, and when it's raining it isn't good to paint anyway -- at least this summer was a bit drier than last summer!

The constant bouts of humidity have meant that paint takes _much_ longer to cure. It can appear to be dry on the surface but if you lean something against it, the contact point becomes a moisture magnet or something, and the paint will come right off at that point.

But yesterday I didn't have to be anywhere else and it was sunny, so I got out there in the morning around 10:30 a.m., started painting by 10:55 a.m. -- usually I haven't been out there until the afternoon. Took breaks more or less every hour to get water or a bite to eat, and kept going until clean-up around 6:30 p.m. This is the color coat, so I'm also more particular about keeping the painting as continuous as possible, even though one can always feather the edges of the work area and come back to it later.

So, I painted the entirety of the gallery/narrower half, the west side of the center wall (wider half), the north wall, and around the door way on the west wall. Didn't quite have it in me to keep going and do the last bit -- plus with the rain that was expected the next day I wanted the paint to have as much drying time as possible. Next sunny weather is supposed to be Thursday afternoon.

Not sure if much trim will get painted this year, with the weather we've had, but with the main walls painted we'll be able to move forward on putting in the floors.

Also, ouch.
helwen: (Default)
So, I didn't get to painting yesterday. That means I still haven't quite finished the prime coat on the west side of the center wall. On the other hand, Gavin (our handyman/carpenter) is going to be doing some work on finishing the storage spaces today, so I'd just have more painting to do anyway.

The humidity got to me in later morning, so I spent the first part of the day doing desultory things in the house, trying to get my energy (and ability to breathe) to improve.

Late afternoon I went out and worked on cleaning and moving things. We had some furniture in the library because of lack of space elsewhere, but really need to get as much of it out as possible so Gavin doesn't have to keep working around things -- and me as well, for ease in the painting.

This meant making space in the barn, which has been taking overflow from projects in all directions.

- Moved sheet rocking tools from the library back into the barn

- Separated the sheet rock scraps from the plywood scraps

- Pulled out non-construction materials, like a folded-up sawhorse

- Folded up a giant tarp

- Moved a few things like a backpack and pack frame up into the loft

- Threw some bits of scrap wood for camp fires out the door

- Put some of the clean trash into the minivan because we keep forgetting we're using the barn as a staging area

- Sorted some of the wood shop stuff to put like things together

During the first part of this it was good that it was just me, which was actually a good thing. There wasn't enough room for two people, plus I was working out in my head what needed moving and where. Toward the end Lyle helped, which was good because I would have really struggled with the box of dishes I found, and also with moving a big wood box from downstairs up into the loft.

He also moved a table from the library into the barn, which was a goal, plus now we can take a look at one of the supports and repair it.

So most of the day wasn't much, but I got in a good 2-1/2 to 3 hours of work. It's just as well I didn't get to the vacuuming, because it's wet and rainy here today, and Gavin's doing more woodwork :)
helwen: (Default)
Didn't do a lot in the library last week, weather was kind of suboptimal for me. Prep for Lughnasadh and the crash and burn noted in an earlier post. Nothing over the weekend either, as we had a wedding to go to on Saturday so I was trying to not show up with paint on me -- mostly succeeded :D Sunday was a recovery day.

****

Wedding was wonderful! Lovely to see two people dear to us making their pledges to each other and continuing to build a wonderful life. Great catching up with some folks we haven't seen in a while, too.

****

Got back into painting primer yesterday, including some apparently awkward spots, as I ended up with a little paint in my hair... closest I'll probably ever come to silver side streaks, alas.

Today is rip down a piece of electrical wiring (disconnected), wipe down the old painted timbers, vacuum again, tape protection around the counter, and finish priming. Lyle will be helping as he's available, so it isn't all on me, but likely it's mostly me. He does have a regular job, after all!
helwen: (Default)
Lyle took over working on mudding for a few days, then I pitched in Thurs/Fri. Rainy weather for parts of the days has delayed further painting but that's okay, plenty to do.

***

Made a set of curtains for a friend's new home. She'll be replacing more curtains over time, but the curtain over the kitchen sink was bothering her the most so I thought a new curtain would be a decent house-warming present. Also got a new curtain rod for her, that's actually long enough for the space. The one that's there is quite bent in the middle :D

Side benefit is I got to use up some older muslin and the end piece of linen from a clothing project, so yay, more stuff leaving the house.

***

Today was the last day of the Greenfield art gallery show. We did take-down this morning, as well as getting new pillows from Wilson's Dept. Store, a couple of tops and a skirt from one of my favorite artists who was at the Gfld. farmers market, and a new jigsaw at Home Depot. Yay for multiple errands in a single trip down the mountain.

Lyle was trying to pick up the old jigsaw yesterday but the cord was trapped under some other things and he lost his grip. It dropped on a wood platform from less than one foot height and shattered the casing and the grip. It's from the early '70s so maybe not surprising? Shocking at the time, though.

***

Oh! And we picked blueberries at a friend's place in town -- just a few quarts as we couldn't stay too long. I'd like to go back in another week or so (he has 100 bushes), and also plan on offering to help him with trimming the bushes once the season's over. Some of them are getting a little over-grown.
helwen: (Default)
Yesterday I helped a friend transplant some iris and other plants in the morning. Took a break for lunch and some indoor stuff, then went out to the library to do more painting. Not dead today, which is kind of surprising, considering bronchitis is still hanging on...

Finished painting the east side of the center wall, then completed the north wall (large surfaces -- base boards are another time) -- and then I went on to do the area around the west door. I was trying to use up the entire gallon of paint but ran out of steam.

Tali tried her hand at painting when she came out to chat, and started the west side of the center wall -- the bit that's over a storage space at the north end of the room, plus over the top of the doorway at that end. I have to tape and tarp the new counter-shelf area before we can paint the rest of the center wall.

I don't like the new primer paint as much as the stuff I used before, so we're going to exchange the unopened can for one of those -- Benjamin Moore Fresh Start is definitely the better choice, at least for bare wall board.

***

Rough time going to sleep last night, couldn't seem to stop having coughing fits. Eventually it calmed down -- going from vertical to horizontal is a challenge when you have congestion.

***

Overslept, went out to water as many of the plants as I could. We at least still had dew on the grass -- more usual for our field, being in a narrow valley. The plants definitely needed watering.

Oh, and finally anchored two of the gourd strings I've left hanging on the bird gourd structure. The gourds are being slow to grow; I have concerns about whether or not we'll get viable gourds.

And now, I can stop for a bit and have breakfast, at 11:00 a.m...
helwen: (Default)
Mostly-but-not-all a copy/paste of one of my FB posts. I'm trying to get used to posting in more than one place.

***

No painting yesterday. Realized that (a) I've been pushing myself pretty hard the past few days and (b) I was running out of primer paint. Turns out what I thought was more primer paint is ceiling paint...that paint is now in the upstairs bathroom, waiting for us to paint the ceiling in there.

So we went shopping for more primer, as well as the finish paint for the walls and trim for the library. That was an experience in itself :D But we have it now, and I may try to put on more primer today.

Then we decided we were just too worn for more work of any sort and went to the movies and saw Spiderman: Far From Home. Very enjoyable, stayed through the credits and saw both easter eggs.

***

This morning, we got a call from Delta -- some folks dropped off some wool with her last week, which she has plans for -- and then brought by _more_ today, which she didn't have plans for :D

So I have a few bags to go through, and we'll see what other folks might like as well. I'll do the initial sort immediately, as those folks will supposedly also be dropping off linen in the near future.

***

Hm, what else? Oh, I'm working on making a candle holder from a little wall-mount plant holder. I'm using one of my glass antique insulators in the pot-holding hoop It isn't a perfect fit, so I made a macrame holder for it, with some beads incorporated at the top edge to make the opening smaller. Just adding some embellishments and then I'll find a place to hang it.

***

I made a poncho of sorts? It isn't as long as I've seen them be, but it's long enough to throw over whatever tee or tank top I'm wearing if I'm not wearing a bra and need to go to town. Complicated back/shoulder/neck issues mean that, at least for now, I don't wear bras much because they make everything worse. I made it from a table runner and some lace scraps leftover from someone making their wedding dress. I embellished the lace edges with some pearl beads (mix of new and re-used), and the front has a random design of some of my mother's collection of buttons. I may need to put some buttons on the back for counter-weight, but for the most part it works quite well!

I'll have to take some photos and post those.
helwen: (Default)
Didn't paint yesterday. Sanded and then saw I needed to do yet more mudding. Spent some time adjusting my expectations as I went, but certain minimum standards have to be met, even in a barn.

- Watered plants this morning, did a little weeding as well.

- Lugged some old containers out of the trailer with L's help and emptied them out.

- Said the heck with it and started painting - L joined in on that endeavor when he was able, seeing as he had other things to do as well :)

Yes, there were breaks between each of those rather physical endeavors :D

Didn't get as far with the painting as I would have liked, especially since I was at it for 2 hours but it's start, so yay. And as Lyle pointed out, I was working around a doorway, a couple of room corners, and a window.

***

Tomorrow we're going to a local ren faire, but not until the afternoon. So I'm hoping I can get something useful done in the morning.

Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closing

I hope the state legislature gets it together to save them from closing. I practically grew up in my local library, reading far more books than I or my parents could ever have afforded (or fit!) into our home.

I finally started reading the comic at Unshelved.com last week. Library humor. Of course it goes back to 2002, so I've been reading the archived ones... and am now in 2006. *sigh* I both like and hate finding an online comic... amazingly I'm still getting some work done, but since I haven't really been breathing very well lately I guess it's okay I've found something that requires little physical effort. Although, not having my heart occasionally beating like crazy when all I'm doing is sitting would also be nice.

It's kind of amazing I didn't become a librarian in some ways... when I was a kid I alphabetized all my books -- they were mostly fiction so not much point in using the Dewey decimal system, although I did separate the science fiction from the mystery, etc. I also created my own catalogues for them, by both title and author. The Bible was tricky in the latter respect, so I gave them the author '77 Christians'...

My mother and one of my brothers became librarians (she was in archives and special collections and he's head cataloger at the Stanford U business library -- yes, there are specialties within the field, just like doctors, lawyers, programmers and many other professions).

Unfortunately our current collection of books is rather disorganized, between the move and the fact that we don't have enough space for all the books so many are in storage. I've tried to organize them by type at least, but eventually I hope to have at least the non-set fiction that's out alphabetized. Sets are.... interesting. I don't remember there being so many of them when I was a kid, but then I only had a few of them and the only set I really thought should be in story order on the shelf was J.R.R. Tolkien's LotR trilogy.

Some series have a definite timeline order but the stories don't follow directly on each other's heels. Andre Norton's Witch World is a good example of that. There are enough books in the series though that I just alphabetize and don't worry about the timeline.

I really do need to organize the fiction this winter... by author of course and then by title within each author's collection. It would be nice to have just a _little_ bit of order in the apartment...

Somewhere in New England is.... one of the most amazing libraries I've ever seen.

Not in person, alas. But there are pictures.

*sigh*
