Raining off and on -- still humid. I saw on FB that a number of friends had bad days yesterday; humidity seems to have been the final straw in most cases.

This post is a bit of a downer but ends on a more positive note.

***

I commented to Fitzw sometime in the past few weeks that it's one thing to read about how changes in the climate are going to have effects on communities or regions and another to be dealing with it personally. On the larger scale, we see how it's taking longer for places to recover from disasters, to the point where they won't be recovered before the next disaster strikes. Wildlife may not have recovered habitat, buildings still not repaired, businesses inoperable or less than 100%, etc. All sorts of different systems, under more stress than usual, will not perform as well or just outright fail.

The pandemic plays into this, as it's inevitable that outbreaks will happen. We've had outbreaks in the past that could have been worse if they hadn't been caught quickly enough. Humans failed on this current one; containment didn't happen. As our population grows, it's getting harder to catch this kind of thing, I think. And as we encroach on lands that would probably be best left alone, like areas with thawing permafrost... well. Such cheerful thoughts! Meanwhile, any way we can stop drilling in the Antarctic/far north regions would be a good idea, if only to avoid hitting a giant methane deposit/pocket.

My main hope at this point is that more people are actively trying to fight corporate greed, so perhaps we can slow the train down enough.

The knock-on effect for individuals though -- that's been a real trial this past year or so. Still trying to puzzle out better ways to live, etc. But it takes longer to do everything and minor setbacks seem to become complete blockages - at least for a while. Our laundry line decided it needed to rot out at the base and break this summer, as an example. On the other hand, the allergy doc says not to hang laundry outdoors during my allergy seasons... so, almost never. I do dry some things indoors but I don't want to deal with that much humidity during the summer, because asthma. I'll try to figure something out... In a couple of years my allergies will hopefully be less of a concern. Best thing most of us can do is just try to be as healthy as possible.

And of course some of what I posted about yesterday are knock-on effects, and some of it's going to get worse as various systems struggle to keep going. All it takes is one ship getting stuck sideways or a major crop failure or whatever, and gaps appear. Combine that with subpar governing, short-sighted self-interest, etc. Humans in groups tend to be no more intelligent than Karenia Brevis - the algae that when it blooms becomes known as the Red Tide. They can kill other sea life with a sufficiently large bloom -- and eventually they can even kill themselves off, until their numbers decrease or dissipate enough to re-balance.

Too many people only care about their tribe, not seeing that what happens to people in California can have consequences elsewhere in the country - such as the smoke from wildfires this summer. Or the smog in China that was so bad it formed a huge brown cloud that crossed the Pacific to the US. Or runoff from monoculture fields in the Midwest to all life in and around the Mississippi, going all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Nothing stays in one place. There is no "away". Hope we can get enough to learn this and act on it.

Well, that's enough of that maundering. I could go on but I have things to do and I aim to get some of them done.

There's supposed to be a clothing exchange on Saturday - hoping the weather holds for that... I'll be picking up some stuff from Double Edge (DE) costume shop this afternoon to bring to the swap. Maybe there'll be a coat of the right style and size for one of our housemates -- his beard is kind of Abe Lincoln-like in shape and style so for Halloween he's planning on having some fun at work.

I threw away a pair of pants rather than fix them. I do have other things that will be going to the swap but I've decided I can't save everything or everyone and I just don't need to invest time in something that wasn't great anyway.

***

I'm struggling with keeping all the costuming stuff. When will I be at a convention again? I do like making that sort of thing... well, we'll see. At this point it's more a struggle in regards to existing costumes, as they take up space. Fabric and some of the other stuff I've acquired can still be used for other projects... One of my goals is to simply make more stuff so it isn't all just sitting there :D So yes, the "decision" is to avoid making the decision, for now.

***

I had to buy some new fabric for the Code Orange project but I also used swap stuff and a bit of my wool batting. Oh, and an old velour tabard from ages ago! I needed a drawstring bag to hold some of the smaller bits in and it was definitely time for that tabard to go. I originally made it for my first boyfriend, then it was loaner garb for a while but it lost some of the fake gems I'd put on as trim. I actually found some replacement gems, but really, it needed to be retired. Anyway! Going to make a few more drawstring bags out of the rest of the thing -- so some stuff getting used and/or repurposed, go me.

Did make it to the post office to mail the Code Orange box yesterday; should get there in a couple of days.

Okay, time to get lunch and do some sewing. Picking up clothing in a couple of hours. Might order some desiccants to use around the house as we can't afford to do a whole-house system.... I'm thinking if I put some in pots and get some wall-mounted plant holders... could work.

Ordered some Halloween-themed fabrics from Joann. They haven't all arrived but some are already in the wash today. Most 2 yards (online requirement). I'm waiting on the stuff I want to make curtains from...

I'd been admiring one of the fabrics Danabren had for a bag and realized that my stash, while large, was inadequate. It's perhaps mildly alarming how much fabric I've ordered since the pandemic began...

Some of it I didn't think I'd end up using, too, like the book/library-themed stuff. I mean, I like the fabrics but not enough to have yards of it about. I'd been thinking of doing a fundraiser for the local library and then got overwhelmed with everything else. Now that we're going to need more masks ourselves, I may make some masks for them to sell. They also need some for giving away, but as a fundraiser it could still be a thing. I'm not sure what else would be popular for book-themed stuff... maybe a few shopping/book bags. I picked up some pieces of plain even-weave fabric at the swap earlier this year for lining bags.

I love the purses I see some people making but I don't think I have whatever it takes to do those fiddly things. Well, maybe if I did half of it by hand :D Honestly though, when it comes to cute purses that involve zippers I'd rather throw money at someone. Eh. Not high on my list of things to make, so whatev. I think it's only something I've thought about because of seeing so many of them on the maker/fabric pages lately. I might come back to it in the winter.

I've actually managed to make some not-mask things this year, so go me. Dish towels, pouches, a skirt, the iron palm bags, and I'm working on a couple of shirts, one for me and one for Fitzw. I might make another simple dress, soonish. With a matching mask -- the awesome thing about Spoonflower is being able to get the same design in different materials.

Crazy weather these days. May's behaving a bit more like April. We celebrated Beltane on the 4th and had all four seasons during the ritual!

Covered up the shelling and split peas for the past couple of days -- frost is one thing but wind chills of -20F are another. Uncovered this morning and they look good.

****

Been continuing the work of whittling things down here, there, and everywhere.... basement, enclosed porch, trailer, barn, library... There's zero chance of all the fabric fitting in one place, but I'm hoping to sort some of it a little better as far as like going with like.

Sorting some more books out as well, altho' I'm not sure how I'm going to get rid of them since the town book exchange is closed right now. For now, I have the luxury of bagging and boxing them up - once there are enough to do that - and storing them, properly labeled, likely in the trailer.

Lyle got rid of some old paperwork yesterday, so we're starting that "fun" project...

****

I made more masks last week, might make more this week... I found some more bits of fabric I'm not interested in keeping. Mostly have a homespun look, so should make some of the folks around here happy :)

I think I've found all the fabrics for one or two projects -- somehow they got separated so I'm going to bump them up in the queue and make something before they can get separated again. Unusual for me as usually I bag/box parts together so that can't happen. Well. I can use some new vests/sleeveless jackets.

I've finished the white dress -- or at least it's wearable and done enough. No pics yet because it's a summer dress and the weather still isn't great. Plus I'm trying to finish a hat to go with it, so there's that... I got a beekeeper hat from the farmer's co-op - hardened open-weave white hat, looks kind of like one of those adventuring/jungle/pith helmets. The suspension headband had torn through the grommets on one side so it was marked way down. I tied a string through the holes to repair it. Sewn one netting for the sides and back so far. Last year I made a floral thing to go on it but I didn't like it so I took it apart yesterday. I have another piece of netting for the front that will overlap the other netting on the sides -- have to hem that. And I need to remake the floral bit -- it will not only be decorative but hide my headband repair.

I harvested some fiddlehead ferns last week and more today. The stinging nettles are ready to harvest the tops, but I'm too tired and cold from being out to look for fiddleheads. Sometime this week, though!

Ran into Meguey and Vincent B yesterday morning! It was great to sit and chat for a bit <3

No joy at the farmers market - guess Lori had to change up her schedule, so the shoulder is still a bother.

We dug up and brought a white peony over to the family farm for Ma. Lyle planted it, with some help from Chris and Beth's kids, esp. William :) Got a bunch of stuff done in the house there, then back home briefly and then off to Easthampton.

Didn't see Meg and Vincent there, but there were a lot of people a Culture Chaos! Found Eli, so that was cool. Saw Dawn Rising hard at work, so we didn't talk to her but did chat briefly with Hunter, at Awen Tree. Tried out pops from Crooked Stick Pops - very good! Also got a little food from Glory of India. Enjoyed the music and seeing people making things and promoting their products or projects. Met PJ, who is trying to get folks together to work on reducing the amount of plastic people use.

We looked around at a store with antique/vintage things and found a lovely cream-colored pitcher with designs in green - claims to be late 19th c. Wedgewood - haven't verified that yet, but it wasn't in pristine condition - no chips but the gold detail is a little worn. Tolkien would've liked the designs, and I'm sure it'll look great in the library.

Cut out a few pieces for a jacket last night, too. Been trying to keep moving with sewing projects. Helped a couple of friends with getting projects going earlier this week. Young family, all about learning things and finding a different way to live in the world. As far as sewing, she has more overall knowledge but he was better at learning to use my sewing machine. But since they got home, she took over hemming his project, as he was concerned whether it would get done in time to wear to Solstice, given everything else they have to do. Still, learning happened.

Anyway! Had to take ibuprofen a few times yesterday but overall, a good day.

All the ones on this page are available for order, not just the top one. Some of them are avilable in more than one color, and also apparently you can order them as fabric, wrapping paper, and wallpaper.

When I was a kid my mom would get two-three sets of bed linens for me, and they would always be complementary, so that no matter which sheets or pillow cases I used, they would match. I expect she was teaching that one could have more variety with less and still have things look like something Martha Stewart would be happy with (long before Martha though), but apparently the real takeaway for me was that pillow cases don't have to match sheets.

Don't get me wrong; I do like matched sets on occasion. But I also love all different kinds of fabric designs. It isn't practical to get lots of linen sets (for both monetary and space limitations), so instead sometimes I indulge my yen for something fun on a small scale, and make pillows for the living room or pillow cases to add to the bed linens.

I do believe a small splurge for pillow cases may be in order...

[EDIT: I also sometimes make pillow cases for the living room pillows, so I can just change the look without buying more pillow forms]

Well, I was doing pretty well with the posting and then suddenly stopped. Phoo.

So! I've continued to muddle along on the sewing. Finished making both the silver and black kimono, still working on embroidering the mon.

Ironed the old black silk hakama today -- they're not in too bad shape, one little tear near the bottom of one leg (mendable), and one tiny burn hole at about knee/upper calf height (not mendable because it would show too much). I made them for when Kai and Genevieve were king and queen and were doing Japanese for their reign. The burn hole surprised me, but I did wear them to Pennsic, so at some point I was too near a fire apparently.

Converted my old white skirt (from when I used to do garland dancing) into knickers for the Loli outfit. Pictures later.

Shortened an old SCA skirt, as the bottom edge was frayed and ragged from being over-long -- part of doing a Spanish well-to-do look. Added gold bullion fringe near the hem so that the bottom of the fringe is at the hemline but it has the fabric in the background to add substance and depth to the fringe. Lyle and I went to a Steampunk party at the Springfield Museums -- great music, fun crowd, great art, and all for $10 for both of us.

Finally mended the leg seam on the silky pants that go with our old Chinese Tai Chi outfits. Also discovered a repair I needed to make on my long petticoat, so that's done too.

Still working on clearing an area for part of this year's veg garden, but with all the rocks in the soil I can't work on it for very long periods. The goal is to also clear out the grass to the south of this area for the herb garden. Making progress but feeling a little discouraged because it isn't done yet. I need to get out there again today, if only to harvest some stinging nettle, but going to try doing a little more digging too.

L has helped when he can, but he's also been working on keeping the pasture down, clearing all the old plant debris and digging out stumps, removing some of the fencing, etc. The fencing's quite a job, with not only posts to remove but also the fencing is well stapled and/or tied to the posts, and the fences that were still standing had rocks holding down the bottom edge -- underground. Might not have started out that way, as the fencing isn't new, but hard to say. The fencing that's down is this pile that got partly taken down and rolled into a messy pile and left there, and then brush and brambles grew through and over it. I started the work of getting it out and L has continued it. Some of the fencing is salvageable and some not so much.

We gave some of the neighbor's garden stuff away. More to go. The greenhouse is mostly empty.

The grass is growing now, and L has done some mowing already.

Yesterday for art was mostly writing and posting about stuff I've been doing, and I still need to post a few pics for the Bat Girl wig, I guess... not happening right now!

I did do some work on a Steampunk choker/collar I've been working at, off and on, for a few months. I had some scraps that I thought might work, so I put the foundation together a while back. Then I found some metal embellishment pieces, and got that trim that I thought was going to be lavendar but when delivered was black (wrong photo with item for sale) but hey, black is useful to have and I realized it would go with the choker so.... anyway, last night I worked on doing some beading, which is part of how I secured the two metal pieces to the fabric -- they're pierced filigree pieces, so I just sew through some of the holes and stick a bead on top. Eh, if I remember I'll take a pic or two at some point.

Today I haven't done much creativity-wise, but I've been thinking about how to rearrange some stuff in the house. I need more space in the upstairs pantry (basement pantry is currently a dream and consists of a milk crate with winter squash and a few bags of emergency dried goods) -- but the stuff that needs to move is crafting supplies that I need easy access to, so I don't want to just stuff things in boxes and shove them into the basement...which is full of stuff, some of which is waiting for us to get that trailer...which can't happen right now because we have a ton of snow, and then there will be mud...so I'm working out in my brain what the possible moves are down there, before I actually set my hands to it.

If I can get my act together, which I think I can, I'll make a few cloth bags today; shouldn't be too hard to do, and it will get some fabric out of the radiant room. Sewing, while it takes a while, is one of the ways I'm working on making space. There are things the house needs and we need, and once the stuff is made the fabric will be in the right place. Uff.

And now, lunch!

Straightening Grain of Fabric

And although Bob is not a master tailor, his adventures in making a peasant outfit are quite illuminating (plus he does get some instruction from Kass when he gets stuck).

Here's part 1:

My apprentice Robert Fairfax, who's recent adventure into sewing some of you may have been following over at the Reconstructing History blog, has a blog for putting up some of his SCA work. You can find it here: Fairfax Files.

So far, a few scrolls (the calligraphy part) and the documentation for some pins he made. I recommend reading the paper -- it isn't long but is well written, and an excellent exemplar for folks who are learning to do write-ups for their A&S submissions.

btw, he makes the pins for sale as well, both the everyday pins and the fancy coral-headed ones, and you can see pictures of them Medieval Pins

If you're into wearing veils at events, I recommend them. I personal have a horrible time with having anything over my ears (my lip-reading is only so good...), but I am thinking about getting a bronze needle, and maybe some linen sewing thread. I have some thread, but another spool isn't a bad thing. The Bocken 60/2 comes in several colors, too. It isn't inexpensive, but Bob reports that it doesn't break like some of the less expensive ones do, which sounds to be a more durable product.

Was poking around at Kult of Athena and thought I'd see if they had a scabbard that would fit the sword I already have, but no luck. The one that comes closest is the scabbard for LoTR Sting blade (too short and fantasy besides). If they sold gladius scabbards I'd be all set, because even though the hilt is a medieval style the blade length is more like a gladius.

Of the swords they carry, I like the Roman Spathas but of course since I don't have a horse that would be a bit silly. The Mainz style gladii are pretty, though of course my tastes run toward the more expensive ones. This one is acceptable, this one is nice but maybe a little heavy.

Now, the Hanwei gladius is a nice-looking one and there are oak leaves on the scabbard. And then, there's the one by Albion. Oy. Completely worthy of the price of course. But I should be saving my dollars for other things.

Speaking of other things, my MIL, with help from my SIL Doris, rearranged her room and didn't need a turning clothes-hanging rack any more, so I brought it upstairs. I'll be using it to hang various fiber and clothing projects from, so things have been getting moved about. A cabinet that no longer fits in the textile room is now in the living room, where L has installed the tv et al in it. The thing the tv was on will likely go out to the barn, although at the moment it's still sitting in the living room. More sorting, moving and hanging up of stuff to come.

Been updating my MIL's books this week. Need to finish up work on my Mom's glossary tomorrow and email that off.

L hooked up the stove and tomorrow I get to do the second test firing -- yay, learning how to use a wood stove! My mom had one when I was a kid but I was never very good at building fires that lasted. Although, it was a pretty small stove, so maybe my expectations were too high... hm. Stoves are a bit different now though (I think our old one didn't have a damper -- maybe something in the chimney?), so lessons are definitely in order.

Got a little further with the vest I'm trying to make, but apparently I need to fold space somehow during the assembly. That's tomorrow... should be interesting.

- Might bring some more wool down from the attic today, to make something for this lovely winter weather we're having.

- Do some yoga exercises

- Wash the woven goods I finished (forgot to do that yesterday))

- Finally deposit last check from the chiropractor's office, plus another small check

- Pack the new Moosie spindle so Lady H can see it/play with it this p.m.

- Go to M&Ms for the scribal workshop (where Lady H will be), so I can look at lamb's wool she's bringing down

- Maybe some more sewing?

- If we decide to go on some errands today, we might walk the mall, but I hate being there on the weekend.

So, not a riveting day, but hopefully we'll get a lot done, and it's always fun to hang out with some of the baronial folks :)
