Free Library of Philadelphia Branch, Regional and Central Libraries Closing

I hope the state legislature gets it together to save them from closing. I practically grew up in my local library, reading far more books than I or my parents could ever have afforded (or fit!) into our home.

This closure directly affects Sir Mord. He's not too happy about the upcoming layoff. :(

Let's hope the legislature gets their act together. Unfortunately, this isn't the only library system in trouble. Libraries are struggling all over. Might be time for everyone to check out their local libraries and see how they're doing.

That second sentence of yours is absolutely dead on for me! Although until I read it I never really thought about it that way. Now I buy the books and rarely hit the local library any more. [My costume books collection is better than theirs, anyway. ;) ]

True, we rarely go to the libraries either. Although I do like to go the the university one at least once a year. Our local one is tiny, but I'm happy to support it for those who do use it.

That's appalling. I wonder if library supporters will get the same kind of inane attacks against them that happened out in Jackson County OR when their libraries closed for a while? (Only kids need libraries, and they have the school library... Libraries are useless when we have the internet... Why don't you whiners just buy books... etc.)

*nods* And the school libraries are only open for limited hours. Plus, many libraries have computers so people who don't have PCs can still go on the internet -- although I suppose the state doesn't care about people who can't afford a computer :P

It's bad and getting worse.

I must be getting old! I really do not like the direction our world is going in. It seems to be now that the emphasis is too much on the individual and not the good of society as a whole. I too spent more time in the library as a child than playing outdoors and I read far more books than my parents could afford. What about this generation? Do they use libraries any more? Do they use books anymore? Has the internet replaced libraries?

I agree. Community is severely lacking these days. I did spend time outdoors -- my mom was big into gardening ;) But both my parents loved reading and we kids all shared that love. Thank goodness they didn't mind us hanging out doing that instead of going to hang out at the mall (or equivalent, since the nearest mall was hard for us to get to) :)
