Well, it's April now and AEDM is over, but my last post was before the end of the month so...suffice to say, I'm still plunking along. I finished the embroidery on the first mon and made a traceable pattern for the next ones. Actually made a little progress on the kimonos.

Fabrics-store.com has started something called The Studio, and they're having a variety of maker contests: Interior Design, Re-enactment, and Fashion. Entries must be mostly of linen, final submission date is April 15. I don't have anything suitable for entry, but considering changing gears and trying to come up with something. Well, hm, maybe I have a few things... I'll have to think about that. I have made a few linen tops and a hooded sleeveless jacket that I use for gardening and the like... First prize is $500 store credit, which would definitely be handy.

Monday I started laying out the kimono pattern on some silver/grey shantung silk. There isn't actually enough for a proper kimono, but as this layer will be under the top layer, nobody's going to see that, esp. as they'll all be tucked into the hakama. This has the advantage that I could always wear it mundanely with a sash, over pants or a skirt. Figuring out the size was interesting, as I seem to have misplaced that part of the pattern. Fortunately, I made an underlayer based on this pattern ages ago, so I measured on part of that (I did horrible, non-traditional things to that garment, taking out seams because I had wide fabric and putting in seams at the shoulders -- probably I was either struggling with keeping the silk from shifting over that long a distance, or I simply didn't have enough space to lay out that many yards at once).

I'm using the Folkwear pattern, which has quite a bit more information on traditional methods, design, and wearing instructions than I remembered it having. When I last used it, I made my sleeves longer, but I was trying for Kamakura period, not Edo. I cut the sleeves one inch less than in the pattern, as the silk is somewhat heavy and I don't want it to rest on the seam of the outer layer. The outer layer is also somewhat heavy material - 5.3 oz. linen, in black.

I was trying to decide if I want to line them or not. Noble/formal wear was usually lined, at least according to the Folkwear pattern, and Bat Girl would be the daughter of a prominent person. But I wasn't sure how many layers I want to wear, despite the hotel being climate-controlled. Plus I'm not sure how well a med-wt. linen would drape if fully lined (probably with more linen). What I've settled on at this point is fully lining the silk layer both to protect the silk and to create a uniform drape when worn by itself, and to only line the sleeves of the top layer. The sleeve openings will be wide enough to glimpse the inside of the sleeves, so having a different color showing would add a little depth/detail.

I also started work on embroidering the mon. Not too bad, but wondering if I can actually make two of the three of them look identical or not...

Didn't get the mon pattern done Friday - L gave me a massage instead. I'm good with that ;)

Saturday I finally found my old wedding dress from the first time I got married. Yes, I still have it, altho' I wasn't sure I did... I made it, so at the very least I figured I would either find someone who might need one or I would scrap it for parts. Well, not too many people my height and size around here, and then it got dripped on by something while in storage, so then I figured I'd still get some salvage from it...Saturday I wanted to try to save as much of the skirt as I could, so scrubbed stain remover into all the marks -- and they all came out!

It's frost white, so I'm thinking I can use at least the skirt for the snow queen. I don't think I want to keep the train though; might come in handy if I decide to try to resize/remodel the bodice. Hm, I might even have some of the bodice lace over layer material lying around somewhere...

Sunday the only thing I got done was making the mon pattern. Now I have to figure out how to temporarily stick it to the fabric so I can trace it, the life it and do it again -- three times. I can try holding it in place first, but not sure how successful that will be.

The skirt with rust stains is looking better; I re-applied the salt and lemon juice and left it out over the weekend. I'll bring that in today. I've decided that even if some of it still shows, it should be mostly lost in the gathers I'll be doing, so I'll use the whole thing for making bloomers. It's actually too long for Lolita bloomers, even for just-above-the-knee ones, but I can throw some pleats in to shorten them.

So, not a lot over the weekend. Back and hip continue to be a problem. More soaking in the tub and more using the theraroll today...

[EDIT: Going to look for my double-stick tape. Also, might try the Elmer's stick glue I have, for temporarily sticking the pattern down.]

Thursday I got a few inches of chain stitch done on the t-shirt bag.

Today, I think I'll be doing well to vacuum the living room rug...well, should be able to pull out the patterns and fabric for Bat girl at least. Horrible time sleeping last night, so really dragging today.

Looked at mon as they're placed on clothing. I will be doing 3 of them, two in front one in back. I should be able to draw up the mon pattern today as well. Single bat, with curled wing tips is what I'm planning on.

Still need to make the jacket for the demon pony outfit but I don't have the right color thread at the moment and my brain is too tired to figure the cut for that right now anyway

Oh, and I should really bring in the skirt I hung on the line nearly a week ago to try to remove the rust stains (salt and lemon juice, then hang in sunny place) and see how it looks.

Tuesday I finished attaching rings to the lavender floral dress, and um, something else but I forget what it was...

Tuesday and Wednesday I did a quick spritz of coating on the bat girl comb. Back and hip are being more bothersome than usual, so not too much activity on any front, although I did do a little research on netsuke, inro, ojime, etc. because I wasn't sure how to use the bat netsuke. I'd forgotten all about inro, actually -- not sure I'll have one or go with a soft container, which I've also seen. Yes, it's for a costume, not re-enactment, but modeling things on actual Japanese stuff will give a better feel to the total "look" -- and Batgirl does need to have a "utility belt" ;)

Soaked in the tub yesterday and will do so again today; still working on making that a more regular thing, as I really should...

Had L take some pics of the re-vamped dress; will work on posting pics, not only of that but some from the development of the dress as well. Going to see if a friend has any pictures of me in the dress as I originally made it...

Sunday, I tackled the lavender over skirt. Redid some pleats, redid the front, inserted a stiffener into the waistband and finished the top edge of it. Still need to hem the ends of the edge ruffle and add hooks and eyes to the waistband.

Also sewed on two more rings onto the back of the old lavender floral dress, mostly because I was too lazy to find another needle for the over skirt, so I used up the thread on the needle attaching rings and then switched colors.

I think the bat girl comb is coming along...I thought the brush strokes from the decoupage were too much, so I've been applying light coats of acrylic spray coating. The stuff is nasty so I'm using it on the enclosed front porch. During the day it's warm in there, but I can shut it off from the rest of the house after spraying, and it has good enough ventilation that it clears out of the porch much more quickly than it would inside the house proper.

Sheesh, guess I've been busy elsewhere...

Anyway, looking for stuff in various storage places. Still haven't found one thing, and this point I'm not even sure I still have it. But I did find a white eyelet skirt that I made back when I was doing garland dancing. It has a couple of rust stains, which I'm going to try to remove. If I can't, it's okay as I'm thinking of turning them into bloomers and could cut around the area, but it would be nice to use all of it.

Did a tiny bit more chainstitch on the t-shirt bag, Wednesday night. We were at an information session on a proposed new type of national forestry relationship. Can't say we're enthused, but will see what happens over the summer.

Worked on attaching a waistband to the lavender overskirt; it may have draping issues...going to try moving a couple of pleats.

Yesterday I washed a bunch of white stuff, two of which have rust stains (above-mentioned skirt and a table cloth). The batiste with leaf outlines on it is looking much fresher now.

Found one of the dresses I was looking for, but only because I was hoping it was with the dress I'm not sure I still have....definitely looking forward to warmer and longer days -- some of the stuff in both barns has to go!

Made a meatloaf pie yesterday (used a pie pan), in honor of Pi Day.
