Okay, this won't save huge amounts, but...

1. Assuming you use two dishpans for washing dishes, the water in the rinse pan can be saved to use for the next load of dishes. Or, if you're done with washing for a while, you can pour it into a pail (large container with lid).

2. Drain your pasta and veggies into the pail, too, not just down the drain as usual. Although in the case of the veggies, you might want to pour that off into a separate cup/bowl, and add it to the compost....

3. Save water from washing fruits, veggies & salad greens, too. I just use plain water myself, and if you do too, then you could also use this water for watering house or garden plants.

4. When pail is full, it can be used to flush the toilet. (flushing can be done by putting water in the tank, or in the bowl. If you pour into the bowl, you may need to pour a little more water in afterward, slowly, to refill to original level).

These are wonderful ideas. I am bad when it comes to water for washing dishes. Our sink plugs don't work so getting dishpans would be a step in the right direction.

Not sure if pasta water would be good for washing dishes with, but I can see using it for watering plants or flushing toilets.

Thanks for sparking ideas.

Is Herbal 7-9 pm as usual??

I have a chiropractic appt at 6:30 in West Springfield. If my Mom drives me, we can come up after that. We'll be a little late but we might actually make it. It would be nice to make it since we missed Saturday due to car situation.

Pasta and veggie-cooking water are also great for soup stock. Last weekend I had a bunch of veggie cooking to do, so I put a minimal amount of water into a stockpot and began by using that to boil a couple of ears of corn. After the corn was cooked, I put a steamer insert into the same pan and steamed a bunch of veggies for future use in a marinated vegetable salad. (That's tonight's dinner.) When those were cooked, I made a pot of soup that provided two dinners for 2 and one lunch for 1. All from the same half gallon of water.

Every little bit helps...

I like that -- you get flavoring from the water, and [maybe] get back some of the nutrients that leach into the water.

Kind of like using the grease from frying bacon to fry the eggs (only healthier).
