As of last night there was a Cat 5 cyclone (hurricane in our part of the world), named Gonu, heading toward Oman.

EDIT: Apparently they've never had one this strong in that area ever, and they and the surrounding countries have no preparations for this kind of weather. Last time in recorded weather history for a big cyclone was in 1945.

Checked in at The Oil Drum this morning, as they're gathering info from Accuweather and other sources, and the storm looks like it's made land, although it likely lost some strength as it headed up the narrow gulf, because of encountering dryer air there. They were talking about 10-15 ft. high surge from the ocean, and the terrain there is only a little hilly. Folks are in for a rough time there, even if the storm goes down to a Cat 2.

On our side of the world, L and I found it interesting, as have a number of others, that this hadn't been reported at CNN, MSNBC, or BBC as of late last night. As of this morning, CNN has an article here: CNN.
BBC and Forbes also have articles now, MSNBC still needs to catch up. The Forbes site says that it hit Oman this morning, but most other refineries should be safe, and they don't expect even Oman's production to be down for more than a few hours. Hm. Which is good for the rest of the world I guess, but doesn't address all the damage to homes and other businesses.

Meantime, being uncertain what this all meant in regard to gas prices, we went and filled up the tank this morning, picked up some things we needed at the local hardware store, and dropped the torches Baroness J loaned us for the event off at her and W's house (all within about a mile's distance).

EDIT: Concern on what what affect oil prices is focused on delay of tankers being able to be loaded and to be able to leave the gulf.

Got another large barrel for water, because although we captured quite a bit, we learned that we could have easily filled another barrel. Also got a small trash barrel, as we'd used our current one for some of the rain water yesterday and decided that we really don't need a large trash can for our trash. Got a small wire shopping cart - great wheel action, and should be good both for shopping and carrying our helmets and weapons to the battlefield at Pennsic. Also some pint canning jars, and a couple of short window screens that fit into the window frame. They have a metal shutter part on them that keeps rain out, so you can keep the window open for air. We were figuring they'd also help to keep the pollen out, so that we wouldn't have to put the AC in yet.

Today is a clean up day. The house has stuff all over the place, between the event, seasonal clothing changes, and general rearranging that's in process. Looks like the weather's mostly clear, so it might be a laundry day too.
