So, Oprah Winfrey had a show on going 'green'. My mom called to tell me about it, and I actually did intend to see it, out of curiosity if nothing else, and because I knew that at least the treehugger.com guy would be on. But I lost track of time while I was out gardening. Of course, she has her web site, so I went to check today and sure enough, info from the show was posted.
I have picked up a few interesting tidbits so far (haven't finished going through all her stuff). When you buy a liter of water, you're actually buying 6 liters of water -- takes 5 to cool the plastic bottle when it's being made. So, they recommend getting a filter for your tap, and reusable bottles for when you're on the road -- with the recycling number of 2, 4, or 5. They're the ones that don't have plastic leaching into the water if they get hot. As the guest for that part of the show, Simran Sethi said, if you can taste plastic, you're drinking plastic. A lot of stuff comes packaged in 1 plastic -- recyclable, but not as safe or stable. So, if you get something in one of those, keep it in a cool place, and don't keep it for reuse. Some folks like steel containers... I have no idea which uses more fuel and other stuff to make them, but I would imagine that steel lasts longer. And as for not being insulated, well, I'll be working on making some insulated bags (organic cotton or wool batting, tough but attractive fabric to cover).
Here's the link to Ophrah's site if anyone wants to see what else was on the show.
Sun's coming out more, so I should go out and play in the garden :) But I haven't forgotten about writing about those dreams. Will try to do that sometime later today.
