Saw the orthopedic surgeon today, mostly for my right shoulder, but my neck was bugging me again (same side). Got x-rays and went through more range of motion stuff and resistance tests.

I have arthritis in the shoulder, and also an acromion hook. That latter thing is a hook of bone on the top front of the bone that goes over the upper end of the humerus (upper arm bone). It should cover the back and top of the end of the humerus, but not go down in front of it. The result is that the ligaments attach further forward than they should, so the space between the bones is compressed -- less space for movement, more likely to get inflamed, and of course the muscles don't particularly like it either. He doesn't think there's a tear in the rotator cuff, so that's one thing in my favor. Yay!

So, got a cortisone shot through the ACL in toward the bursa, since he figured that was inflamed as well. The shot comes with some painkillers, so it's feeling better/more usable at the moment. Those will fade of course, and the shoulder may actually feel worse for a few days. With luck it'll give relief for a month or so.

These shots are not fun though not too horrible; some discomfort, not a whole lot of pain but feeling the effects inside my shoulder joint was kind of weird. And I reacted to the shot a little - hot, sweating, and nauseous -- the shot can affect blood pressure. So had to lay down for a few minutes and they got a cool wet cloth for my forehead. Now I just have to keep hydrated today :)

Meantime, I have to set up appts. for therapy, the aim of which is to create more space in the shoulder joint and hopefully help with the neck issues as well. And hopefully after the therapists have evaluated the situation, I'll know when I can start doing archery and rattan practice again.

He said it was probably not too likely, but if things don't improve in 2-3 months, then he'll have to go in and remove the hook. Good news on that is (a) things would be where they should be and (b) he could remove some of the arthritis calcifications, etc. at the same time.

Only time (and effort!) will tell.

I had a cortisone shot for bursitis and nerve impingement in my shoulder and it worked WONDERS. The pain from the shot itself was over within about a day - I had it on a Wednesday and was fencing again (better than ever) by Saturday. Hopefully you will have similar results!

Thanks! Me too -- and hopefully soon some tools for dealing with it.

I'm so sorry to hear about the orthopedic problems. I've had rotator cuff problems for years and they're no fun....

Ouch! I hope the pain goes away quickly. I know that when Mom had coritsone shots the results were amazing............ and in a very short time. Good luck
