Hrim Schola
Mar. 11th, 2007 08:12 amMuch fun was had by all. Of course we couldn't do all the things we would have liked. I, for instance, would have liked to hang out with
loosecanon and do some naalbinding, but perhaps it was just as well I didn't, seeing as she taught 30 other people throughout the day...
I had fun chatting with Isabeau in the morning, mostly about clothing but also other stuff. We had an early lunch, as the food was smelling so wonderful. I also managed to have some bits a couple of times later in the day, as learning was hungry work! The inside out hedgehogs were yummy, and I had pistachios, pine nuts, some veggies, an egg, later on some excellent ember day tart and a dariole, and last but not least, chicken in coffin. Yummmm....
Oh, and I saw a lovely necklace at
herveus and his lady Megan's place, which I asked
fitzw for as my b-day present. Bluish-green and gold beads, with some multicolored/cool-hued glass beads on the middle of the strand. I haven't seen it yet, but it's my understanding that he did indeed acquire it :)
Went to
bunnyjadwiga's _very_ popular Bathing and Hygiene class -- most excellent! -- and later her egg coloring class (it's period!), where we had fun dying eggs with red cabbage, brazil wood, madder, saunders, saffron, and other dyes. We all got to take some home to show/share with our friends.
I also went to
peregrinning's class on Diamond Twill Comparisons, another excellent class. Learned more about broken diamond vs. on point diamond twills, looked at photos in the hand out, a book he had there, a good quality color photo of one of the xerox copies in the handout (which he did a pretty decent job with as well -- white on white is tough to reproduce in xerox), and of course he had his tunic and some of his towels with him.
The last thing I went to was the weaving round table, and passed around the things I've managed to do so far on the table loom. The fake fur was definitely a highlight, I think mostly because it's so different. It's an area that could use more exploration, but it isn't a project for the impatient or those without significant available time. We chatted a little about guilds and their purposes, among other things.
peregrinning brought his loom to the round table so that I and another lady (Rossick, or something like that) could try our hand at it. I haven't woven in linen yet, so I was definitely eager to try out the feel. It is not so different from cotton, although it has a bit less give. Still, very pleasant to do. I'm looking forward to working with linen, hopefully this summer.
fitzw took
herveus's 3-1 Twill class (tabletweaving) and Haraldr's loom-building class. I expect he'll write something about those at some point. He seems to have enjoyed them greatly, that much I can say.
I also got to meet Mirabel in person, and Pagan made sure she and Magnus met each other, so he got to meet and talk with new tablet weavers as well as ones he'd met last year. His current project is in red and white linen, with a quite sharp-looking design. Mirabel and I and
fitzw will be working on coordinating a workshop here in Bergental for later this year, with her as leader, hosted at our home. I also got to meet Phiala, which was excellent as well.
I heard
ellid's class on Intarsia went well, and in general, everyone seemed very happy with the classes they attended, and the day overall.
We had dinner at Four Brothers in Amenia, then went home. The ride was longer going home, because of the rain, but we got home safely. Parting was fairly quick and quiet at the house, I expect everyone was pretty tired from the day of learning.
*** end ***
We were kind of wired and stayed up too late, but had to get up by 8am this morning so I could be ready to go to Quintavia. Second clothing workshop is today. Must pack pins, scissors, etc.
