Yardwork, gardening mostly
May. 22nd, 2018 10:19 amWhenever it's not raining, we're outside, for the most part. House and creative work are suffering somewhat, but I'm trying to keep that going too. Hanging out on Thursday evenings with an old friend has helped some on that front.
The various greens in the greenhouse are still going -- have to make sure things are vented though, as it gets quite warm in there now. The door space at one end being open helps, but yesterday L and I got a shade cloth hung, for more help. I also broke down the second insulate box so I could reach the wall next to it that has sunfilm on it. Reversed it from black to white, so now all the sunfilm has been reversed or removed. Also covered another of the black rainbarrels so it's white.
We have a riding mower on loan from the family farm at the moment and L's been making good use of it to get the property caught up. Part of the meadow is being left long, both to save some work time and because it's nice for the critters to have a little extra play space now and again.
A lot of the grass cuttings are mulching in place, but some we've used to cover plants I've pulled and want to make sure they don't survive to go to seed.
Went to a seedsaver/plant swap thing on Sunday. I didn't have anything to contribute material-wise but made a donation to help the folks putting the event on, helped with advising a few folks, and definitely got my money's worth :) Picked up a few tomato plants to add variety to what I already had, some storing onion starts, a lemon balm (lost most of mine over the winter), a chocolate mint, some _red_ bee balm, and some calendula!
Most everything's in the ground, if not in their permanent homes. Have a lot of digging to do before that happens. Glad I have the raised bed around the greenhouse.
Turns out one of the Lavendar is still alive, if barely. We'll see how that goes.
Yesterday we got about half of the hay mulch from the north side of the greenhouse to a spot by the river that needs repair from a storm some years ago. Raining today, so the rest will wait. Basically trying to get things out of the porch and in and around the greenhouse so that can go back into construction mode.
