Gardening: Drought and heat are definitely not helping... we watered some plants yesterday and this morning you could hardly tell. So of course, more watering happened this morning, and there will also be some watering this evening (very soon now, in fact). L found the sprinkler and lots of hoses, so that will help. This morning was a combination of sprinkler and hand watering.

The serviceberry and the bushes (all in pots) are having the worst time of it, I think, except for the hazelnuts. Most of them seem to be responding well to the repeated waterings. I'm glad we got the pots into the ground, so they don't get quite as baked as otherwise. The fruit trees are also under stress, as is the new Japanese Maple (SIL D's company gave it to the family, in honor of FIL William). Lawn is sere.

Tomatoes are happy, peppers not so much. Corn grows any time you give it a little incentive. Squashes and the like really need more water than they're getting this week, so the sprinkler is good that way. Beans are doing all right.

Japanese Beetle trap is working well! I should probably get some Safe Soap spray for the flea beetles though, which are playing havoc with some of the flowers and herbs.

Black raspberries are ripe and ripening -- small, seedy, but very tasty.

Harvested Garlic scapes this week, which are safe in the crisper, as are some turnip greens that L picked. Supposed to cook those tonight but.... seriously, it's a wee bit hot right now!

Kung Fu and Fitness: Classes are going well. Yesterday's was a little grueling, owing to the weather, but only part of it was outdoors. I really enjoyed it though, even the outdoor bit. The air wasn't quite as bad as it was today though, which was good. Upped hydration quite a bit today and need to keep that up -- muscles don't work well without it, which leads to fun with knees and hips...

Assuming all goes well, L and I will be testing at the end of the month. I'm hoping it cools down enough in a couple of hours that I can get in a little light practice. Currently, we have fans circulating air, one is set to pull the hot air out of the room to the outdoors, and we have the A/C on in the bedroom (with the ceiling fan helping to spread the coolness). Yes, we try to live sustainably, but health is important and my asthma kicks my a** in this weather.

Just started seeing Leta, a woman who practices Chinese medicine, energy work, and accupressure. Only been a couple of visits so far, but it seems to be helping. Stopped taking anti-inflammatories of any kind (in pill form), two Mondays ago (June 28). Caffeine has anti-inflam. properties, as does ginger, so I still have that in the morning, plus sometimes in the evening. Don't want to get hooked on caffeine either, thanks. Life is rather a bit more painful than usual right now, but hoping that continuing work with Leta, as well as some changes in things I'm doing, will help.

Do you empty your Japanese beetle traps in the henhouse? My girls LOVE to eat them....

Do you use a pheromone trap? That's what we use. Also, our beetles would probably be dead.... do you do it daily?

I do use a pheromone trap, and I don't empty the trap daily - I wish I did, but I managed it about twice a month. I dump the contents out and call the chickens over... snack time! They don't seem to care whether the snacks are alive or dead.

Other than a little daily wilt, the jerusalem artichokes are loving the weather.
We lost all but 3 echinacea, the squash only just went in, and the mints are mostly OK, but for the chocolate mint.
The orchard is sending up panic suckers. With luck, we might lose two apples. I enjoy the idea of them but they are not productive in the useful manners.

Have you got soaker hose? My squash seems to like that the best. ( kabocha )

Enjoy the workouts, I'm glad it's being fun.

Pain wise, I am keeping you in my thoughts.
