Steamed fiddleheads, chopped garlic & onion and sliced almonds, all over a bed of rice. Yum!

Only thing I would have added was some tofu for a little more protein, but I didn't have any here. And for dessert? Chocolate!

And another bit of flavor to this dinner? The fiddleheads, garlic and onion were all from the farm :)

Well, let's be fair: The garlic and onions were cultivated on the farm, the fiddleheads grew wild. ;-)

Hey now *bats at Fitzw* Wild or not, they're (mostly) still from the farm. And I don't think the golf guy minds ;)

Sounds delicious!

Was this meatless by design? I don't recall whether you are vegetarians or not. Either way, though, it must have been all the more scrumptious for being so local :)

No, not really. I just didn't happen to have anything fresh or thawed and didn't want to use the microwave to make up for that. And sometimes I just like a lighter meal than other times :) And yeah, local is good -- I should have been growing garlic years ago, it's so easy. Plus there's the scapes in the summer, so two crops from one plant definitely has my vote.

I didn't dare plant garlic last fall, since I have free-ranging chickens. Soon, though, they'll be free-ranging somewhere rather further away from my garden beds :)

:D I do enjoy it when I can do it... although I'm not planning on growing my own rice! I love reading about all the lovely stuff you get at your farmers market too.

Mmmmmmmmm, fiddleheads. I haven't had them in years. Gram used to pick them in VT. I miss that flavor!

*nods* First time I had them was at a restaurant. Then some years later I was walking through one of the local Stop & Shops and there was a bag of them sitting there, with a price tag and not even a label as to what they were. Of course I grabbed a bunch of those, for several meals. It's definitely a treat -- you just have to keep a close eye on any in your area, to catch them before it's too late. Do you have a partly sunny/shady part of your yard? You might be able to find some on a walkabout and transplant some -- they aren't endangered or protected.

There was a munitions plant not far from my house once (my place was actually built as company housing in the teens). Actually it's still there, just not active. I don't eat ANYTHING that comes from that dirt. I have planter boxes full of purchased topsoil for that.

That said, I haven't seen any around, or there would be a planter full!

I have never had fiddleheads, but anything that can be cooked up with onions, garlic and mushrooms has my vote. I want to get some okra too. but both will have to frozen. :-(

Hm, mushrooms sounds like a good addition -- next time!

As far as I'm concerned, those three always go together. *grin*
