'Up here' in most of Nova Scotia we are provided with one big green 'wheelie bin' for compost plus a small counter-top/under the sink one for inside. The compost bin and regular garbage are collected on alternate weeks, although some summers the green bins can go out every week, and it seems to work for us. The blue-bag recycling can go out every week, as well as the papers and cardboard, although they're separate. (Since I now live alone, my blue-bag recycling usually only get's put out once a month when it's full, rather than waste the bags.)
