Misc. Doings
Oct. 21st, 2008 02:03 pmSUNDAY/MONDAY:
- L moved a chest from the living room to the bedroom; insulate the wall and free up space in the living room.
- Printed up cards and magnet covers for re-stocking inventory.
- Got the fencing we used for the beans out of the garden. L will finish re-rolling it and getting it into storage next week.
- Got garlic and onion bulbs in the ground, and mulched.
- Spinning on the wheel was brief -- drive belt string needed shortening (done) and waxing (not yet). But the wool yarn is going to be very pretty -- hand-dyed merino in yellow, gold, orange, russet, deep red.
- General moving of stuff and getting rid of some stuff.
- Potted my Rosemary and brought it in. It was doing pretty well, but they're not really meant to stay out all winter long in our area.
- Interesting research on the druid thingy I got at PPD, but still unidentified. Friends also working on it. Need to photo back of thingy and post that, since it's an unusual backing. Stylistically, I'm guessing it's at least 1950s and maybe older -- folks will understand when they see the back. Also, I came across a Masonic badge that had the same style of oak leaves and while it was a different order I'm thinking the same or a contemporary artist may have created both pieces. That badge was made around 1900.
TUESDAY (so far):
- Tired, lots of dreams still, woke up late.
- Tidied up front porch area, put things on porch or in barn.
- Set up for card-folding and bagging tonight.
- Tossed some green pumpkins from the garden and also some apples I let sit too long over the wall. *sigh* Hate being wasteful, but at least the critters will have something to eat.
- Couple more boxes down to barn for the grass-fed beef pickup, whenever that happens.
- Brought laundry in
- L and William did some gutter repair on the barn, some on the East side but mostly the West side
***
Weather is funky today. Predominantly overcast with occasional spats of rain. Some bits of sunshine earlier today but I think that's all gone by.
Still need to put hay around the Lavendars this week. They, along with several other plants, decided to bloom a second time this year. Odd, especially for the Lavendar.
Parsley is incredibly tasty fresh from the garden -- that stuff in restaurants will never compare.

Date: 2008-10-21 08:06 pm (UTC)1. I put some garlic in, but since I don't eat onions and if I want to cook with them I get them from my CSA farm, I'm ok.
2. I REALLY want to see that wool yarn when it's spun! It sounds GORGEOUS.
3. Do you know whether potted comfrey will need to come in for the winter? My potted mint dies off in winter but comes back fine in spring. I've just never had comfrey before and I can't find any hardiness info about it.
4. "Grass fed beef pickup" - are you buying or selling said beef?
5. I let my parsley go to seed one year in Florida. It grew to about 7' tall. It was amazing. There were gorgeous green caterpillars all over it. And when the seed ripened and fell, it sounded like rain, there were so many seeds.
6. There is no 6.

Date: 2008-10-21 09:05 pm (UTC)1. There is no 1.
2. I'll take pics when I get enough to show off.
3. I used to grow my comfrey outside, when I lived in Northampton and it did just fine. I plan on doing the same here. Since yours is in a pot, I might be inclined to mulch around the pot to protect the roots.
4. Buying said beef. Friend of a friend would get people together to buy in on a beef cow. Although next year I may just buy from the local person up here, for convenience. But it does make it a little more affordable to do it this way, because of buying 'in-bulk. Minimum share was 25 lbs. Up here we also can get some awesome pork and ham and other piggy parts. I can afford some of that but not the organic turkey :P
5. Parsley is awesome stuff. I need to put a stake in by mine, so I can find it this winter. I'll harvest some to dry of course, but sometimes you can get some green from under the snow. Definitely letting mine go to seed next year!
6. Anymore harvesting to do? I still have to get some baby onions and the rest of the ginger roots, and some kale...

Date: 2008-10-21 10:56 pm (UTC)2. I'll put the comfrey pots into nice thick leaf mulch, then. Thanks for the suggestion.
3. There is no 3.
4. Beef - I'm trying to get permission from the town to put up a shed at the edge of my lawn... next to my exisiting shed... so I can run one or two beefers on the edge of my property and into/onto the pasture next to my land (with prior permission from the farmer who owns said pasture, of course). The town is having kittens because despite my plan to put the shed onto exisiting lawn, the site is 115 feet from the creek. (well, DUH - who'd run cows where there was no water?) This property was pasture when I was a girl, but there was no barn on it. Anyway, they've stalled me out of this season already. I'll hope that next spring I can get on it. I want not only a beefer (to be shared with a friend; another friend wants his own) but also chickens and a pair of goats.
5. I cut parsley and froze it in a zipper bag. That worked really well for me. Once frozen, it crumbled nicely.
6. Harvesting... I have a couple more side shoots of broccoli left. I pulled up my soup beans today - put the entire plants into a wheelbarrow and pulled that into the garage for sorting out later. My last sowing of green beans were mostly dead so I pulled those out and fed them to the rabbits. I lost track of where my volunteer potatoes had been, so I can't harvest those. I didn't plant beets or carrots this year, though I did let last year's carrots go to seed (remember I asked about seed saving a while back?). I have some chard, but I don't actually love it (and neither do the rabbits!) so it's mostly for decoration. I wish I had kale... might well plant some next year, for soup and/or for the rabbits. The babies should be stewing size by Thanksgiving... but we're going to keep one of the does.
7. I've knitted a bed blanket for my queen-size bed on my knitting machine. I need to do the finishing on it, then pass it off to my Mom, who insists on crocheting a row around the edge so it won't roll. We did this with a blanket for my daughters' bed. My brother is next in line (his will be a Christmas present) then the boys after that. I am SUCH a Webs junkie.
8. First, though, I have a midterm in Old English tomorrow morning - and a cold, so I'll bring lots of mint tea with honey in with me - then a court date because of the Other Parent on Thursday. I think I'll rest on Saturday.
