Wood stoves

Nice soapstone stove - hybrid, actually -- metal woodstove with soapstone on the outside. The stone retains the heat for longer heating of your space than just metal does. Keep in mind that they will take longer to warm up a cold room, for the same reason, the stone. But I think the residual heat on the other side of the equation lasts longer than how long it takes to heat up the stone...

Found some others too, including ones with ovens built in, but they weigh too much for a second floor apartment, plus they heat up more space than we have. They have both hybrid and masonry types. Nice-looking:

Date: 2008-03-06 06:16 pm (UTC)You can also swipe one of the smaller soapstone panels to serve as a heat insert for a fireless cooker. It was a common technique in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Date: 2008-03-07 04:57 am (UTC)I'd been thinking that if we couldn't quite afford to get one the hybrids, we still might be able to acquire some bits of soapstone here and there, to use as bed warmers and such. Fleamarkets and such abound here...
The masonry ones look especially nice, but need a foundation under them, considering how much they way. But they do look nice, with the warming bench and all.
