V for Victory!
Feb. 12th, 2008 10:50 am... garden, that is.
Casaubon's Book has a good post on starting victory gardens and reasons for doing it. There are also links in her post to other sites where the cause of growing your own has been taken up. In the comments to Sharon's post are a few recommendations on container and apartment gardening that might be helpful.
I need to review what I have for seeds myself, and start planning. Won't be able to start seeds until March at the earliest, but that isn't so far away... oh, and I just found one of the newspaper clippings my mom sent me that is actually potentially useful. It's on sheet mulching, and seeing as we have pretty much everything they list in the article already here on the farm, I might give it a try.

Date: 2008-02-12 04:16 pm (UTC)BTW, thank you for reminding me about Casaubon's Book. I lost all of my bookmarks around the New Year and hadn't got around to looking for her again. Glad to have that one back!

Date: 2008-02-12 04:29 pm (UTC)Yes, the choices can be both fun and daunting :D
My mother-in-law Marian has offered to have a shelf set up in their kitchen in March, so that I'll have enough room for garden starts -- I'll have to make sure I guard it from their cat. Don't want him biting the tops off...
I've decided to forswear spinach as being too difficult for me (3 failures is enough), but almost anything else is game. And Marian would like a new strawberry bed put in, which the farm hasn't had in several years. Of course you don't get much the first year, but that's okay. I'll plant the bed this year and go to a local pick-your-own this summer so we can make more jam.
For sure, we or William will be planting: peas, green beans, various types of tomatoes, kale, beets, squash(es), pumpkins, carrots, parsnips, and potatoes. Already have green onions (perennial), and maybe I'll try for yellow onions as well.
When you have some thoughts on what you'll be planting, I hope you post it to your blog. Always nice to see what other gardeners are doing :)

Date: 2008-02-12 05:21 pm (UTC)I will be adding kale (for the very high iron content), peas and beans this year as well as tomatoes and my usual big variety of herbs. I am still thinking about cukes. My strawberries should be really producing this year.... ohhh can't wait...
