I'm a water rabbit, myself. And the color for water in the Chinese system is black...
That makes me....
The Black Rabbit of Inlay! Bwahahaha!!
[EDIT: For more detailed info, go here: http://www.chinesefortunecalendar.com/LE.htm . NOTE: the clock hours are on European/Military time, so if you were born after noon, go further down the hours to get to the correct time]

If you page down on the Chinese New Year page, you'll get to a section on Lucky Elements. There's a link there to a page for finding your lucky element. This asks for your birth date, including time zone and hour and minute. This will give you more info on your individual sign, including the animal and element for the day you were born.
For instance, I'm born in the year of the Rabbit, but my day sign is Dragon. Now there's an interesting mix....
Oh, and the page with the luck results leads to some other pages that might be interesting to look at.

Date: 2008-01-24 04:53 am (UTC)Cast iron has more character, imho. And better for cooking over an open fire too, I think... more adaptable in some ways?

Date: 2008-01-25 08:12 pm (UTC)One physical near-miss for me... my car accident in '92 was an either/or thing.... only doing everything exactly right to minimize the damage kept it from being fatal. Felt very blessed not to have been in anything as serious as you or S have dealt with. One other incident before that. Don't want to repeat either, thanks.
Here's hoping all our challenges in the near future are not quite so challenging...

Date: 2008-01-24 08:45 pm (UTC)I'm no expert, but I believe that attributes from your day/time of day within the year affect the more general attributes of the year you were born in.
As far as astrology goes, all the elements for the different aspects combine to tell what your lucky element is (for me it's earth/soil), and they give suggestions on how to bring more of that element into your life, to create balance. Also, you can use it to see what months are better for doing certain activities, etc. This comes from the observation of the characteristics of the different animals and how they interact. For instance, when I was reading the year horoscope for Dog for this coming year (L's an Earth Dog), the overall forecast was pretty positive, but it recommended against going full tilt at whatever projects during the first month of the new year. The first month is governed by the Tiger, and apparently tiger and dog don't get along that well.
I don't think I'll ever get terribly good at understanding the Chinese calendar because it's so complicated, but basically, there are 12 animals that succeed each other year after year. But within that year each animal governs a month as well, and within that there's each of them governs two hours in a row of each 24-hour period.
And then of course there's the lunar phases -- 4 other animals, not the zodiac ones -- governing the 28-day cycle. Complicated!
The sword was next to the dog? If yes, it's probably just a symbol to tell you it's metal. White = metal.
