Snow Falls
Dec. 14th, 2007 12:21 pm10" of snow overall. More snow on the radar for the weekend. But this morning, just a few light flurries, and good driving down to PT, over to shop in Hadley, and back up to Ashfield. The current snow is mostly lightweight fluffy stuff, in that it isn't the type you can compact to make snowballs.
The sun has been warming things up enough that we had gentle falls of snow as we went along. Mostly before we got to that point on the road, but gentle enough stuff to be a danger so long as one is driving in a reasonable and safe way. Lovely slow-motion falls of snow off of tall evergreens....
Up here we have a bit more of a breeze now and again, and now the sun has come out and is shining brightly. The wind causes larger falls off of the maples nearby (and other places too, I'm sure -- but this is what I can see from in here). And of course off the roof of the barn, which is quite dramatic!
This time of year, one has to be careful of walking too close to the tall buildings on the farm, including the house, and to look up before entering by one of the two porches. When the sun shines it's quite lovely, but can cause the snow to break free on the roof and come down in small avalanches. Sometimes a large enough sheet will come down that you can feel the impact through the floors...
When we used to have the restaurant in the spring and there was enough snow for the kids to slide down the hill by the north side of the barn on the jack jumpers, the family would block entrance to the ground nearest the barn for this reason. I remember one spring L was out there explaining the taped off area to some of our visitors, when a section suddenly broke loose and illustrated his point quite clearly!
