Ginger and Fir
Dec. 8th, 2007 05:51 pmOne of my ginger plants, which I'd gotten from a friend a couple of autumns past, decided to bloom this year. It started a little over a week ago, and the scent is amazing. When the sun hits the blossoms in the early afternoon, the scent will carry out into the hallway. I like spending some time in the livingroom anyway, but the ginger definitely adds a therapeutic touch to my time there. These ginger are bold plants, not for someone with too little space -- they're around 3 feet/1 meter tall, with big long narrow leaves. I also have a cardamom ginger, which is considerably more petite -- but I only got that this past summer, so it may simply be young.
I've been enjoying them so much, and uncertain of whether we had the time/energy to deal with any holiday decorating, that we weren't sure if we were going to have a tree this year... maybe a bough here or there, later in the month...
Well, we went for a walk on the hillside this afternoon, in part to check something out and in part to see how cousin Karla and William were faring with finding a tree for her to bring home.
fitzw ended cutting a branch off of one tree as a possibility and also to open up the viewing into the other trees in that spot -- being a rather old (30+ years) and somewhat neglected tree lot, many of the trees have multiple trunks. He trimmed the straight part off of the cut branch and it wasn't too bad, but a trifle narrow and sparse. So, we looked a bit more for one for Karla, found a nice little bushy one for her, and now have a tree for our apartment too.
It's standing in the snow outside the house for tonight, but tomorrow we'll see how fir and ginger go together...
