Gardening and cleaning
May. 11th, 2007 09:29 amThe icon choice is for the cleaning... I hope to accomplish much today.
Change of plans on the gardening, as soon as I took the first strawberries out of their pot. Apparently that was just to keep them fresh for longer, and looking nice.
fitzw guessed that there were 4 or 5 plants per pot, and I didn't see any reason to disagree, so we bought 3 pots, one each of three different types. Murf. There are in fact around 25 plants per pot.
So, if we grow lentils and kidney beans at all, it will be somewhere else, as putting live plants into the ground is a more urgent thing. There are now 50 strawberries taken care of - 46 in the ground and 4 in pots (42 yesterday, 8 more this morning). I will pot more tomorrow, when it is not quite so wet out. Today's weather is good for being up in the attic, where it can get pretty warm in the summer.
We still have a couple more new beds to prepare, which I'll do some work on over the next several days, once the weather's decent for that. It was a good thing I was out this morning, since the gutter off the sun porch had detached at the upper end. I put a bucket under it so the plants in the raised bed there wouldn't drown, and told
fitzw about it when I came in from planting. Gutter is reattached and I have an extra bucket of water for the garden (we haven't turned the barrel we got earlier in the year into a proper rain barrel yet). Also, because of noticing and taking care of the problem by bringing the bucket over, I had a chance to admire my two Lady's Mantle plants. They have a lovely fuzzy, pleated leaf -- The leaves come out fully closed and pleated, like a fan, then open as they mature, looking kind of like one of those rounded fans on a stick handle. They're very soft, too, because of the fuzziness. And they catch raindrops, which look like silvery jewels. I've tried to capture that

** Cleaning **
Have moved some things out of the front corner bedroom (currently a craft room), and some things from the other front room. Trying to get more of the bookbinding stuff into one room, and most of my stuff for sale up to the third floor. More books were boxed. Today, it looks like I'll be packing up some dishes and candleholders as well. For the most part I'm labelling as I go, so that I can find things if I really need/want them.
One of the nice things about packing up a lot of stuff is that I'm finally sorting through and getting rid of some stuff. The main reason right now is so that we have plenty of renovation space, but it will also be easier to keep clean. The only 'danger' is that I might like it that way so much that I'll have to get rid of more stuff. Sigh. I have a lot of candle holders... apparently that's one of the things I collect.
One goal for today or tomorrow is make enough space and find enough homes for things that the enamel table can go to the studiolo. We shall see.
