Crazy Plan for Monday, Possibly Tuesday
Mar. 11th, 2007 07:21 pmIt's supposed to get into the 50's tomorrow and Tuesday. I'm going to test the soil in our current and future veggie beds, and if they're not frozen, I'm going to turn them over (well, at least some of it).
Ideally, especially for new beds, this should have been done last fall, so the weeds' roots would be disrupted and the plants would become mulch for the bed over the winter. But I didn't know that then, so I'm hoping to go with plan B, which is turn the soil over now, so I can get at least a little mulching in, and maybe again in a few weeks (twice would definitely be better), before planting time comes.
Digging, if it's possible, to be done in 1/2 - 1 hour units, to decrease exhaustion and increase overall productivity.
I've been reading about permaculture today. A large and complex subject. I'm just trying to understand a little more of how things (plants, weather, terrain, soil types, people, etc.) all go together. Might take a while, even for a superficial understanding, especially to make connections and figure out what's best to do for some of the land on the farm's hillsides, and for our little plot of land here in Holyoke.
