Jul. 2nd, 2009 09:33 pmHeadline at MSNBC: Jobless consumers will hold back recovery
Leader text on front page: "Many forecasters now expect the U.S. economy to begin growing later this year. But persistent unemployment will be a drag on consumer spending."
The article itself isn't too horribly written and does include a bit on what unemployment figures are like when the people who've given up looking (or have been searching unsuccessfully for long enough that they've stopped being counted), with which some articles don't bother.
But the headline is incredibly foolish-sounding. Consumers are ones who consume. They don't have jobs. People have jobs. And isn't it inconsiderate of them to hold back recovery of the economy? And those people who still have jobs but are choosing to spend more wisely and perhaps actually save some money in the bank as well? Terrible, just terrible! How selfish of them!
Fething writers.
