Valentines Day

helwenA day like any other, really, but of course the commerce machine has been going full-tilt. For us, every day is precious, and I care for my beloved and all my friends and family as much any other day as today. I think we may eat out tonight, but in part because I have some shopping to do for Novice Schola, so it works out that we can enjoy dinner at the Chinese restaurant in Greenfield.
I agree with some sentiments I've read today, that this holiday, and many others besides, can be hard on single people and/or people without family nearby. Years ago, a friend/co-worker of mine had broken up with her husband shortly before Valentines Day. So on the day I went out to the local florist and got her a modest bouquet, something fresh and spring-like (and something for L too - I'm not conventional in many ways). They both loved them, and I think in part because it was unexpected. I had no idea how much impact a few flowers could have though, just that she could use a lift... years later that was still one of the things she remembered vividly. What I hadn't yet come to know was just how beaten down her self-esteem had become, living with that truly worthless person. Thank goodness she found the strength to strike out on her own, and learn her own worth.
I'm just thankful I could be in the right place at the right time. Heaven knows other folks have been there for me, in just the same way. Heck, I wouldn't be in the SCA still if it hadn't been for someone else's timely remarks (and no, it wasn't L).
Like any other day, this is a good day to give thanks for all my friends and family.
