First, I honor the service of my father in WWII, my brother Kent although he didn't serve overseas, my friend [livejournal.com profile] gwynt_y_storm who served many years in several places, and all the other worthy folks who have served in defense of freedom, not only from the U.S. but other countries like Canada, the U.K., and France as well.

Second. My father, who was a minister before he went into social work, would be greatly distressed to read about what is apparently happening in the U.S. military today: http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/11/08/5093/ He went to war to protect our nation, our freedom, our constitution.

That article chills me. I applaud his courage in writing it, and that of his son for having the courage to turn down his former dream.

I got 1/3 through the article and couldn't read any more from disgust. I'm glad my daughter didn't gain an appointment to the Academy, but I'm still proud of her and my son for what they have achieved despite this lunacy.

I and my kids respect other's religion, but that's insane.

Your male apprentice who served in Somalia...

He too is distressed and disgusted at the military today. Well, not the military so much as the government giving them their orders.

Indeed, I have friends and acquaintances in the military who are definitely _not_ part of this christian supremacy business. I wonder if they'll be able to advance much, if this continues though. I think most of them entered before this stuff really started to take hold. I wish them all the best, in what seems to be becoming a very scary working/living environment.

That's right! Thanks for the reminder.

Both the government and various parts of the armed forces are having problems, which are becoming endemic to the whole system. Battles are still being fought here at home, like the right for pagans to have the circumscribed star on their tombstones.

But the stories we've been hearing about the quality of some of the training have been distressing too. I worry for the safety of our folks overseas not just from combat but from lack of proper training. The stories we were hearing from a young man who's currently in ROTC training are terrifying -- those who learn to think during the training are the ones who likely will live -- and hopefully can pass on their experience and understanding of things to their fellows.

Wow, I can't believe this is so pervasive. Well, actually I CAN believe it because of what I see coming out of the Bible Belt. That they are using this to control soldiers, the military, and ultimately our policy is appalling.
